5 Reasons the '80s Win Decade of the Century

I feel like the '80s often don't get anywhere near enough credit for what an amazing decade it really was. Having grown up in the latter half of the '80s, but mostly in the '90s, I've always wished the '90s were more like the decade prior.

The '90s were a decade dominated by darkness. It was the decade that took away our innocence. From the constant fear and reminders of razor blades in our Halloween candy or being kidnapped from the playground to music borne out of depression and lack of acceptance by ones peers and, perhaps most prevalent, the HIV / AIDS epidemic (yes, this began in the 80's but it became the leading cause of death for all Americans age 25 - 44 in 1994); it was a 10-year long emotional depression.

The '80s, on the other hand, were just fun. Yes, there may be a case made for another decade to top this list, but I don't see any of them topping the '80s. The only two other options would be the '20s and the '50s but neither one takes the top spot. And here's your proof: Link

1. The Movies

The Goonies, Ghostbusters, The Karate Kid, Indiana Jones, Empire and Jedi, The Princess Bride, The Breakfast Club, Dirty Dancing, Back to the Future, Top Gun, Vacation (and Christmas Vacation), Ferris Bueller, The NeverEnding Story, A Christmas Story, Stand By Me, Big, Sixteen Candles, The Terminator, Die Hard, Say Anything, Pretty in Pink, Dead Poets Society, ET ... the list literally goes on and on because we've barely even scratched the surface here. Tell me there was a better decade for movies EVER. I dare you.

2. The Music

MTV hit the airwaves on August 1st 1981 and changed the face of music forever. Granted, the station has become nothing more than a place to watch some of the most awful people ever do things nobody should ever care about, but in the '80s it was epic. Not only was the music awesome and completely identifiable to the decade, but the musicians were iconic. Madonna, Michael Jackson, Prince, Cyndi Lauper, Pat Benatar, Billy Idol, Heart, Run-D.M.C., Van Halen, Guns n' Roses, Def Leppard, Wham!, Dire Straits, Public Enemy, AC/DC, Foreigner, Bon Jovi, Genesis, the Go-Go's, Journey, REO Speedwagon, Huey Lewis, Culture Club ... and I just have to stop there because enough said.

3. The Fashion

Big hair, leg warmers, and stone-washed jeans ... need I say more?

[YT]XxsXi5_WZIU[/YT]

4. The Electronics

The '80s brought us Nintendo and the proliferation of the personal computer, along with affordable calculators, VCRs in (almost) every home, the Walkman, Game Boy, etc. Tell me anything you know of from popular culture that was more iconic to a generation than Super Mario Bros., Zelda, The Oregon Trail, or Tetris?

[YT]cHh0HiyFyqk[/YT]

5. The People

The '80s was full of characters that are arguably the most memorable cast of characters as a whole than emerged from any other single generation. Harrison Ford, Arnold Schwarzenegger, Bill Cosby, Eddie Murphy, Hulk Hogan, Madonna, Michael Jackson, Mel Gibson, Michael J. Fox, Mr. T, Mike Tyson, Oprah Winfrey, Sylvester Stallone, Tom Cruise, Tom Hanks, Bruce Willis, and even sports icons (pre-PED era) like Larry Bird, Magic Johnson, Michael Jordan, and Wayne Gretzky. No other decade produced more icons (I CHALLENGE YOU!!!).

I disagree with the music, the music of the 60s and 70s was better IMO.

"Night of the Comet" is a B movie 80's classic... loved watching it on cable as a kid in the 80's.

I went to high school with a dude who had about 2 minutes of screen time in that movie.

Great thread(s) BTW, the 80s were a magical time. I was a teenager living in Beverly Hills for much of it though (long story, I'm not rich), so I just might be biased.:)

I know it's been mentioned earlier, but that movie Can't Buy Me Love. AMC was airing it today, caught the last half hour or so, hadn't seen it in years. That girl was hot, shame she passed away so young

Modern music was still finding its way in those decades. The 80s had everything. Rock, Rap, Dance, Modern, Pop, Heavy Metal. etc. etc. MTV made music something accessible, regardless of where you lived or who you were.

The 80s are the greatest years no doubt.

B-Sci Fi that you loved as a kid, some were cult hits:

I'm gonna check these out for sure. Haven't seen them before.

I enjoy music from those decades too. 50s had great music. Hell, I'll even throw in the 40s. All of it beats today's shit.

As for the vid I put in there for music, I may not have made the best choice. The original vid was down so I had to pick a replacement.

Man, I wish they had these things closer to me.

Classic 80s theme of a nerd becoming cool and popular.

Mother of God! Advertisements were so much better back in the day.

This Amazing '80s Arcade Is the Best Virtual Reality Trip Yet!

xs1sdog0n1t5nrtyn8ny.jpg

The Oculus Rift VR headset can take you to incredible fictional places, like scene from gorgeous movies like Interstellar or Spirited Away. Last night, it took me somewhere more grounded in reality, but still spectacular: my own personal, deliciously retro '80s arcade.

The New Retro Arcade, by Digital Cybercherries, easily ranks among my favorite virtual reality experiences thus far. That could be because I'm a nerdy gamer, sure, but it also could be the incredible variety of things you can actually do inside this CRT-tastic game palace.

[YT]gB9jCEXVQDk[/YT]

Yes, that's a video. Press the play button!

Walking along the ridiculously patterned carpet and taking in the dizzying deluge of light and sound, I found that I could play practically every arcade game I laid eyes on, with their buttons and joysticks actually responding to my commands as digital "scanlines" occluded their old-school CRT screens.

There's Tetris, Q-Bert, Missile Command, Asteroids, Joust and plenty more, plus a few anachronistic additions like Flappy Bird and The Legend of Zelda: Link's Awakening DX. (It looks like Digital Cybercherries is using a Game Boy Color emulator to actually run the games.)

But you don't have to have your nose stuck in a virtual arcade cabinet the whole time; there's also a fully operational two-lane bowling alley, a working dartboard, two basketball machines, and a bunch of original Game Boy handhelds lying around, all playable. You can even find cassette tapes with '80s music and stick them into a boombox, then carry it around the arcade with you. Because what's cooler than playing Missile Command while jamming to The Final Countdown?

Hit "Expand" to check out the insane attention to detail on this Game Boy.

Between the games themselves and the incredibly immersive environment—covered in classic movie posters and bathed in neon and virtual cigarette smoke—it felt like a place I could just chill out for a while, and come back every so often to get away from some of the real screens in my non-digital world. I haven't been able to say that about any other VR experience so far.
