It’s best comeback athlete
and best ufc fighter. Winning the hw title 3 years out you can’t beat that. And he’s always been the best fighter

If we went by calendar year it would be hard now to not give it to Jones winning the HW belt the way he did. Certainly way more impressive of a feat than Islam barely defending against the FW champ.

The only reason to maybe give it to Islam is precisely because it goes by year between ESPY events, not calendar year. In which case you get to include his win over Charles too. Which Jon doesn't have a comparable too as he sat out for 3 years.

Not going by calendar is exactly why Islam might have it over Jon... Going by 2023 he loses.

Yeah man, it's totally the guy 100lbs less than Jon who last struggled to beat a 145lber, let alone a 250lber demolishing a fellow 250lber.

This happens every time there's a halfway decent HW champ as everybody takes their blinders off and realizes the best fighter is the best great heavier fighter. P4P is mythical nonsense if there's a great HW around. It's the same in boxing.

Francis, Jones, Aspinall, Blaydes, Stipe, and Almeida all beat Gane. And I won't be surprised if Spivac beats him in Paris. Pavlovich is obviously also a problem, but I'd probably favor Gane due to the style matchup.

It probably sounds like I'm hating on Gane, but I'm not. I actually like his style and think he has a higher ceiling than some of the people I mentioned. But the reality is that, as of now, his grappling is trash.

Cormier's cool because he was pretty active most of the time.

I can see what he means about 'one fight', but he's clearly overlooking what that fight represents.

DC did do something similar in R1 finishing Stipe and then defended a few months later against Derrick Lewis, but let's be real: Jon Jones doesn't need to fight someone like Derrick Lewis or an equivalent at this point.

Jon made him look so bad that now he will be underrated gane was at the top for reason besides francis he beat everyone they put in front of him.

Except it isn't. Charles literally wasn't champion.

I agree that unofficially Charles was the champion. The stripping was nonsense once the UFC acknowledged that there indeed might've been something wrong with their weigh in procedures that led to him being overweight and not that he'd just flat out missed weight. Once they did that Charles/Justin should've just been a non-title bout for Charles where he's ineligible to successfully defend but Justin can win the belt, or a non-title bout on both parts.

But officially he wasn't the champion as they had stripped him back then. So yes, they did fight each other for a vacant belt, not Charles was defending against him and Islam won it off a defending champion. Charles was not champion when Islam beat him, that's a fact.

DC's point is retarded hypocrisy to hype a team mate but downplay someone he hates by pointing out Jones only won a vacant belt when Islam also did that.

Islam beating Charles is no doubt better in my opinion if we are talking best fighter award here. Best comeback? Yeah, I'm okay with Jon winning in this category

This is such a weird award to hand out in July, when the year is only half over. I wonder what the dates of eligibility are.

I don’t really care either way, but maybe Jon was nominated not because he won one easy fight, but because he came back after such a long layoff and immediately won a title in a different division.

either way, DC might look a little less salty if he came up with some better examples of alternate candidates beside his own teammate.
 
Hes absolutely right. One win in 3 years doesn't make you fighter of the year
 
Dana should force DC to present Jon teh award, Jon should maul him and forcably take said award while anik and his clone try to hold Jones back
