A narrative we see repeated again and again. But what does that even mean ?

These guys are at the top of the food chain. If you take top 10 heavies or even wider, there is only a few guys outside that could compete with them. Guys like DC or Jones who are basically GOAT contenders in their division. So, what makes for a strong division:

Exciting fights ? You can't expect 250lbs men to have the same intensity as the small guys and go at it for 5 rounds and especially not when 1 hit KO bombs are much more prominent. KO power rises much faster with size than chin durability.

Competitive environment ? That's what HW is all about. It's hard to keep a good wining streak going in HW and we've seen how hard it is to keep defending a title. Which brings us to:

Dominant champ ? We now have that too. That imo is more of an argument for a division being weak. LHW also has that but i don't hear the division being called weak nearly as much. Stipe is an undisputed champ but his wins aren't stomps for the most part and bar a few rounds in the last fight aren't close to being boring either.

Young blood, competitive up-and-comers ? I think this is a perception issue. Yes, there is a lot of veterans in the top of the HW but there is a lot of top ranked veterans in other divisions as well. The volumes are just much bigger lower you go, so it makes the HW look worse. I guess big athletic guys have better, more lucrative options. This usually holds true for other combat sports as well.

PPV draw ? This seems to be individual and not telling about the division strength.

Pride was an example of a good HW division ? I mean, most of Pride heavies fought all kinds of guys from all divisions. It was probably better for building their legacy and stats but doesn't really speak volume about that HW division.

So, if everyone claims the division is weak, i must be missing something here. What is it ?

They need Lesnar back for name value

adding Minakov would also help

I enjoy the HW division because I have been a stipe fan since the Roy Nelson fight before his title. So whoever he fights, I'm in.

It needs new blood, plain and simple.
Every division goes through the roller coaster phase

40 year old fighters from an organization that has been defunct for over 10 years are still among the best fighters in the division.
The new talent don't know the difference between an armbar and a kimura. I mean think about it. If Werdum, Overeem, Arvloski, and Cain retired today there wouldn't be a single black belt level grappler in the entire division... And those guys aren't far from retirement.

Shit's just bad all around.

If you look at fighter pay, then no wonder. Shit isn't worth it for most people, and big athletes have much better options out there.

also, lots of young talent doesn't seem to know what a treadmill is ...

HW is the king of divisions.

How can one say LHW is great and HW weak, if most LHW are natural HW that cut weight to avoid fighting the even bigger guys.

One could indeed make case for guys like Jon Jones and Daniel Cormier, but they are exceptional athletes and I believe they could do great in HW too, and Cormier has actually already proven he could do well there. But keep a long streak in such a heavy hitting division is less likely

It's almost all old fighters full of injuries and lost chins who's been fighting each other for the last 10 years. Incredibly shop worn division. Anyone putting a lot of stock into "this guy beat Arlovski, Overeem, Hunt" so forth is forgetting that there's literally no one else.

Go back a 8-9 years to Roid Brock, JDS coming up, Cain at his best and Ubereem and then you have a good devision. On par with Strikeforce and maybe, maybe even Pride. But now?

Nah.

The % of guys way past their prime at the top of the division is far greater than the other divisions.

The HW divisions lack of talent is because most guys that big and athletic are playing other sports. Theres also way more money in NFL and basketball and their seen as safer.

Well hopefully it'll have Jon Jones & Gegard Mousasi in a couple of years since it doesn't generate prospects besides Ngannou.

Travis Browne is ranked 14 with 4 straight losses. 2-7 in his last 9 fights with wins over Mitrione and Schaub. That's how crappy this division is.
