I remember Silva-Franklin 2 like it was yesterday. I remember that I was pretty sure Franklin was going to win the rematch. He did not.

I remember being shocked by their first fight. Like jaw to the floor. Up until that point Rich Franklin looked like he was just on another level compared to everyone in his division. He looked bad against Machida but he blamed that on jet lag and I believed him.

I was somewhat familiar with Anderson, but aside from the flying knee on Carlos Newton, I mostly remember him losing by flying heel hook. He did have a war with Jeremy Horn. The fact that he wasn’t able to finish Horn made me believe he had nothing to offer Franklin.

but sometimes fighters just turn that corner and hit another level. We saw a glimpse of it when Anderson whooped Leben. But that was Leben. No way he does that to Franklin.

so when Anderson obliterated Franklin, I was flabbergasted. Like, I felt like I just witnessed a level of mma striking never before seen in the ufc. At the time, I think I was right.

the rest is history. But damn, I still remember my jaw just hanging. Shaking my head. Total disbelief. Awe. Admiration. It’s been a crazy ride being an Anderson fan.
