UFC 257: McGregor vs. Poirier 2

There's not much to discuss on the main event IMO - it's pretty straightforward: Conor is very quick with making his reads and this makes him dangerous from the very start, AND both Poirier's chin and his style of fighing aren't bulletproof enough to buy him time until Conor slows down. Yes, it's a 5 rounder, on paper there is time for Dustin to make it an atrittion fight, where he should have a considerable advantage. But if you ask me, Dustin's chances to extend the fight that long are slim to none. The match-up doesn't play in his favour at all.

Poirier is still too hittable. His high guard is nice, covers him well. But it's not a very complicated obstabcle for Conor (as we saw in the 1st fight). Dustin mostly hides behind his "philly shell". He rarely uses hand parries, hand checks, slips, duck and rolls, which would make his defense a lot more layered and tricky to exploit... Movement is nice, but he's not Wonderboy and still gets trapped along the fence, even by guys with not especially good pressure footwork.

Conor is faster than him. Even if we take away the technique edge. He's just faster. This makes the odds even more stacked on Conor's side. Personally I will be very surprised if Dustin wins this fight.

I don't disagree that Poirier is hittable but he's only been knocked out once since the first matchup, in 13 fights against some of the toughest strikers in the division. While a Conor rd 1 KO wouldn't shock me he can definitely absorb damage, and the weird tko from the first fight could look like an anomaly.

@rev0lver Dustin's chin is fine, just not "bulletproof". And bulletproof is what he needs against Conor. It's a rough comparison, but he is a smaller Nate Diaz without the zombie chin, the reach and the bodypunches.

Sanchez keeps it on the feet and wins an easy decision over Muniz and now he has to wrestle vs Muradov . Not sure how this one plays out.

<Huh2>

Very rough comparison.. Also a shit one.

Merry christmas and happy holidays anyway! Three weeks to go before we get the next card.

Come oooon... Even a lil bit? They are both southpaw pocket brawlers with bad wrestling and good jitz. (And please don't say DP is actually good wrestler. Most of his career he's been matched-up with strikers, not wrestlers. His TDD is shitty.)

@Spath Merry Christmas to you, too :)

If Dustin wrestles from the beginning his superior gas tank should give him the win over 5 rounds.

I think that conor is most dangerous in the first 7.5 mins., after that he is very beatable.

If Poirier is smart he will try to ground Conor early, it doesnt matter if he drops the round, as long as he tires Conor out.

Wouldnt be surprised with Poirier by sub in r4, if he survives the first round.
I agree. Conor has a round and a half to finish the fight. Not only have 7 years passed since the first fight, Dustin was not aware in the first fight of the path to beating Conor. Everyone is now aware of it.

That said, I’m having a very difficult time picking the winner. I can see either guy winning.

Dustin hits a lot harder than Nate though, and that's a huge difference given that like you said both like to be in the pocket firing away. Dustin doesn't have one shot earth shattering power, but he sits down on his punches unlike Nate who just flicks them out there.

Conor's chin has shown to be rock solid until he tires though, so Dustin's power may not matter much early on. But...it may buy him a bit more respect than Conor gave Nate early in their fights.

My big concern with Dustin is that he's starting to show some wear. He looked slower vs Hooker, and won on cardio and heart. He was getting lit up early.

That MMATracked guy told me Dustin is a quitter though but has decided to be less of a quitter these days so he could always revert to his old ways and quit again!!! He also said he always slows in fights so one might say Conor even has the edge in cardio!!!

Hmm...I would... disagree LOL.

not liking this card for betting TBH. I do like dawodu as a live dog at +160. He could just outpoint burgos on the feet for 3 rounds. He's faster & more technical. Burgos was just in a war and doesn't have the highest fight IQ.

Happy new year sherbros.

Tsarukuan left ATT for me its a red flag because he trains at a no name gym in LA.
interesting. Arman should be able to exploit Nasrat's tdd but mini kelvin's got handspeed. he could def catch arman

Nasrat is legit and his boxing will be difficult for Arman

I genuinely think Dustin's being underrated here. I think he finds a finish if Conor doesn't put him away early. Dustin's survived (and often times ultimately won) long fights against some of the best strikers in the division. I think it's clear Conor's overall the better striker, but Dustin's grittier while being just technical enough that he should find a target eventually. He hits harder than most of Conor's prior comp and I don't quite think Conor has an iron chin. Super possible Conor finds an early finish, but seems equally possible Dustin hangs in there and deep water feels like trouble for Conor in this matchup.

I agree. I do favour Conor but its a close fight. If Dustin gets past the first round I think it is anyone's fight. I do strongly favour Dustin in the last half of the fight.

Kattar has a longer reach than Holloway and good boxing. Could look closer to Poirier vs Holloway than his fight with Ortega.

Conor gets underrated for his loss against Khabib. His stand up is far better than Dustin's for at least the first half of the fight while his cardio holds up. Dustin could survive but the odds are about right for this one
I. Think Conor just crushes him. Dustin was just in a war with hooker and barely made it out of there. Took damage. Conor has taken what? Bumps to the nose.
Conor ITD easily.

That's the thing though... Dustin is okay with taking damage. Idk about Conor there if Dustin tags him. Yeah Conor hasn't been in a ton of wars but we've seen him get rocked by Khabib and Nate. If they can do that, so can Dustin, and Dustin has survivability.
