The MMA world has been scoring taps to strikes as TKOs for awhile. It used to be ruled as a submission.

This is the third time in recent memory that it's been ruled a TKO.

Edit: I'm not sure if all states and countries rule taps to strikes as TKOs.

Branch vs Rockhold was a sub due to punches. I think it depends on why the ref stopped it. If he saw the tap and stopped it because of the tap it's gonna be a sub.
