Tyron Woodley's Unpopularity Explained by Din Thomas

Why aren't you a Woodley fan (if you aren't)?

He could win his next five fights by first round KO, and the majority of people still wouldn't like him.
No, he would win me over if he didn't fight scared. I don't "not like" him but he is boring and as soon as I hear a guy start in on the "because I'm black" thing it is a definite, "just look the other way" moment. The way he absolutely killed Lawler, I thought we were on to something and then came the Thompson and Maia matches and I, just like everyone else including his fans, was asking myself "what the hell, man, really?"

To be fair, he was fighting WB and Miaia. But yea his fights are kinda boring as of late.

The “boring fighter” option should be changed to “boring champion”

No charisma, unlikeable, not that exciting to watch generally, whiny and entitled.

Was tempted to vote "he's black" just for shits and giggles though.

Who are the 73 (so far) trolls that voted because he's black? Lol

Since Tyron Woodley won the UFC welterweight title at UFC 201 in 2016, the UFC has struggled with promoting a champion with the reputation for being widely disliked by fans. It doesn’t help matters that Woodley’s title defenses since becoming champion have been less than captivating or that UFC President Dana White has routinely feuded with his welterweight champion and thrown him under the proverbial bus on several occasions. But more so than either of those explanations, Woodley’s friend, coach, and podcast partner Din Thomas believes that race is one of the major reasons why Woodley has yet to gain traction with MMA fans.

“He’s not all that relatable to people,” Thomas told the UFC Unfiltered podcast yesterday. “He’s a wealthy black man that speaks his mind, people don’t like that. People didn’t like Cam Newton when Cam Newton was loud and brash. People just don’t like wealthy, large black men to speak their minds.

“It’s not all racial but let’s keep it real, when there’s a debate or whatever, Presidents wear a certain color tie to appeal to a certain demographic. We can’t try to hide the fact that our skin color has something to do with how people treat you. We can’t hide that fact.”

Woodley himself hasn’t been shy about suggesting that his race plays a role in how he has been treated by the fans and by the UFC, and as the issues continue to arise with Dana White still publicly lambasting his champion, it’s hard not to find some merit in the claims. And as for the counterargument that former light heavyweight champion Jon Jones is black and beloved by the fans and a star for the UFC, Thomas says that Jones is more relatable because of his numerous personal failings.

“Here’s the thing: Jon Jones is a lot more relatable because Jon Jones doesn’t come off like he’s great,” Thomas suggested. “My sister-in-law once said to me, ‘Look at Tyron, he acts like he’s better than everybody,’ and she said that not knowing Tyron but just what he puts out there. But Jon Jones can’t because he’s a drug addict and steroids and he’s running pregnant ladies over, so he comes off as human. He has problems and people can relate to that.”

Some people contend that Woodley’s failure to connect with fans has nothing to do with his race but stems from his attitude and suggest that Woodley is just “race-baiting.” Thomas concludes by arguing against that, admitting that Woodley’s inability to gain broader appeal with the MMA fan base at large is not solely a product of his race, but that race is definitely a key factor in the whole thing.

“There’s a lot of different reasons,” concluded Thomas. “Don’t get me wrong, sometimes it comes off as if we’re saying all people don’t like him because he’s black, but I don’t believe that for a second. I just think that’s one of the elements that makes him less relatable.”

Woodley is still recovering from shoulder surgery he had in December but is anticipating a summertime return to the cage, though no opponent is currently set.

Needs cliffs bro, we here at Sherdog can't focus for over 5 seconds. :P TL/DR: because he's black and doesn't fuck up like (the popular) Jon Jones.

Here's a great take on why DC is not popular while Jon Jones is - his lack of fucking up. As dumb as it sounds, it actually makes sense.

Come on, Woodley, quit hiding behind these made up accounts... this particular post is ridiculous. Also, it is the UFC stands for the Ultimate FIGHTING Championship not the Ultimate SURVIVAL Championship. No one can tell you how to fight, how to act or what to say as you are your own man and I do understand holding the belt provides more money for your family but don't be surprised that you get shit on for your performances if you are going to do it that way. You are looking out for your own interests and that is a part of life but the "Just Bleed Gods" are going to make fun of you every chance they get and it has nothing to do with the color of your skin. Deal with it like a man.

I find it hilarious that this guy is replying as if my post really was from Tyron Woodley. I'm a 110 pound white chick. Exact opposite of "the chosen one".

But yeah, I see why people find his fights boring. I only found the Maia one disappointing. Liked how he shut down Wonderboy.

So LT is making the argument he made for years for Jones? People don't like Woodley because he's a successful black man, there is just so few of them, not because was gifted a title shot and fought three of the worst UFC title fights ever in a row.

Woodley could have taken the Colby fight for UFC 219 and earned some easy money and gained fans. Instead he says he gets the fight he wants or he's going to get surgery and be out for who knows how long.

Thomas has been trying to recruit Woodley as his new bull for awhile, I guess it finally worked out for him.

Some dude from my home city who spoke his mind a few weeks ago, and some conservative lady (Laura Ingraham) told him to "shut [the fuck] up and dribble."

He should take her advice. Lebron embarrasses himself in these little controversies. He says or releases some statement full of grammar errors calling others ignorant. I respect that at least he's not having his manager write the statement, but come on man.

The race excuse is so stupid. People love Rampage and what is he? A big wealthy black man who speaks his mind. How about the fact that Woodley just doesn't have that interesting of a personality, has had a couple boring fights in his last outings, and when he does speak to media, tends to whine and complain a lot. Not exactly things that win fans over.

The two of them are idiots crying racism while getting big bucks to take part in a sport.
Theyre not paid intellectuals why does it hurt them to understand noone cares what they think but how they fight.

And noone should care what they think its not the ultimate race debate. Its the ufc.

Lebron is one of the most respected and revered athletes of all time the fuck are you talking about?

Journalists ask them these questions, btw. If no one cared they wouldn't be asked

They're people.before they're fighters. You're here saying whatever you want, they can be there saying whatever they want. Don't pay attention if it triggers you

Being a troll and creating tons of content (vids, tweets, instagram, etc...) is how you make money nowadays.

The problem with Tyron is with how he's decided to troll with his content.

Plus when you beat fan favorites, that also has an impact. People "hated" Rashad Evans for a long time because of what he did to Chuck and Forrest, then later Rampage.
At least he fought like a man against chuck and forrest. That rampage fight was sad.

That he makes himself look like a fool when he rants about other people being ignorant and he can't even speak or write the statement correctly. He plays basketball, it's about physical genetics and opportunity, it doesn't exactly tax the intellect, which is clear whenever these NBA players try to talk politics or social issues.
