Two thoughts about Topuria/Emmett

Honestly, Emmett was outmatched and no adjustments would have made much difference. More leg kicks sounds like a good idea, but he would have eventually gotten countered if he became too consistent with them. It was clear he was just out of his league.

Does Josh even have a ground game?

Josh has shown some good wrestling early in his career, but that was a while ago and at LW. He did at least mix some attempts in against kattar. He probably should have done that against Topuria too, just to set up other strikes off of them. Emmett isn't a very diverse fighter, but he was especially one note last night.

Topuria vs Hall rematch needs to happen!

Ryan Hall had one bad roll out of 23 -- Topuria was lucky to leave with his ankle intact.

1. Obviously, like everyone else, I am thoroughly impressed with Topuria's all-around game. The boxing is very high level - the footwork, the timing, blocking, rolls, angling off, the the smart shot selection... The way he used the jab to catch Emmett lunging in, again and again, was impressive. And when he finally ran low on gas in the 5th, his wrestling and grappling were there, also very high level. His boxing reminds me of a young Masvidal except that he is much less risk averse. The one knock I have on him is that I think that he takes unnecessary risks in these early exchanges. I hope that he takes a more disciplined approach now that he is in the top 5. There is no need to impress or prove himself. Now is the time to win at all costs.

2. The utter stupidity of MMA corners was once again on full display. Emmett was getting outclassed badly, dropped right and left, and used as a heavy bag. His dumbass coaches simply didn't give a fuck. On top of that, they stopped giving him any technical advice mid way through the fight, sending him off with bum lines like "swing hard, bite down on your mouthpiece, fuck it". If this were boxing, the fight would have been stopped by either the ref or the corner. But in MMA, the legacy of the early days freak shows is still very much present. There is a lot of talk about the promotion not taking care of the fighters, but no one talks about how way too many teams are shit-for-brains amateurs who don't look out for their guy. The result is careers being shortened and fighters left with permanent damage. It ain't just Diego - there are a lot more like him.
TAM is not known for technical striking

Before the fight, I was listening to a podcast from a Belgian fighter who spent 3 months training at alpha male and he basically said emmett has fallen too much in love with boxing and barely even trains wrestling anymore. It shows.
OOF!

They could have told him to abandon the boxing and spam legs kicks. Kicks in general. They were landing. How about some takedown attempts ? No they tell him to swing and keep throwing punches

mmm no
Emmett's grappling was inferior to Topuria, as you saw
Emmett's legs were already wobbly and getting wrecked from Topuria's leg kicks

You stick to your strong points and wish for the best in a desperate situation. Desperate dives for legs will get you fucked up, i.e. Conor vs Nate, and a slew of other examples.

His leg kicks were pretty basic. Just calf kicks mostly against Emmett. That style of kicking isn't going to work well against Yair.
I actually think attacking the legs of someone so movement-dependent as Yair would be a good strategy.
Guess we'll see!
Although, as much as I'd like to see Yair beat Volk, I'd rather see Ilia fight Volk.
Either one will be fun.
And if Topuria finds his way to the title, first defense against Evloev!!

To be fair “bite down and swing hard” has worked for him before when he’s been in a losing position late in the fight….

Easy

8 + 8 + 9 +9 + 8 = 42

9 + 9 + 9 + 9 + 9 = 45

1 judge gave more 8's than 9's
Last week 1 judge didn't give out a single 8 to any fighter on the entire card

49-45. That was the score I didn't get initially. Shouldn't this be a 50-45?? 10-9 across the board. after thinking about it. Did one fucking judge say topuria lost a round and then also gave him a 10-8? Cause that's crazy but that's what makes sense. Confused

OK buddy. Stick with what was getting him smashed the whole fight. What could he possibly lose by tying something else, maybe something less expected?
I never said a desperate dive for the legs. I mentioned in another post maybe clinch up and try for a trip. The leg kicks were landing. They were the only shots that josh threw of any significance.
This is an mma fight not a boxing match.
Yes topuria grappling looks good, I'm not disputing that.
Josh could have mixed up some high and low kicks.

I'm not trying to down play Topurias kicks as it is pretty good, but its definitely a lower level kicking game than Yair.

Topuria's kicks:

Yair's kicks:

it's glaringly obvious you have never trained
Hence, it's impossible to explain it to you

Just spar once, all of your ignorance will be thwarted

MMA fans glorify displays of heart and courage but then feign concern when it's showcased. I bet if he had quit on the stool between rounds or tapped to strikes you'd be calling him a pussy for it. I also bet the UFC would then never have him to main event ever again. For a guy like Josh Emmet, there was nothing to lose here. 38 years old and probably never going to climb back to a title fight with 2 losses, you have to fucking go for it. In a different situation - sure maybe you stop that fight, but this wasn't the time. War Josh Emmett, War old bald white guys, War fighters who got that dawg in em', War fighters who don't give up and give us bangers!

What's glaringly obvious is you are seriously dumb. You think I am now going to feel obligated to now try to prove to some random idiot that I train.
Sparing is what makes one see that its impossible to adapt or execute a different gameplan and approach? What the hell are you even talking about ?
Being able to recognise and do those things is the difference between a novice and a skilled athlete.
Josh didn't get to where he is without that ability. He fought on emotion and from garbage advice from his corner.
He needed to go for broke, agreed but he needed something else
