1. Obviously, like everyone else, I am thoroughly impressed with Topuria's all-around game. The boxing is very high level - the footwork, the timing, blocking, rolls, angling off, the the smart shot selection... The way he used the jab to catch Emmett lunging in, again and again, was impressive. And when he finally ran low on gas in the 5th, his wrestling and grappling were there, also very high level. His boxing reminds me of a young Masvidal except that he is much less risk averse. The one knock I have on him is that I think that he takes unnecessary risks in these early exchanges. I hope that he takes a more disciplined approach now that he is in the top 5. There is no need to impress or prove himself. Now is the time to win at all costs.

2. The utter stupidity of MMA corners was once again on full display. Emmett was getting outclassed badly, dropped right and left, and used as a heavy bag. His dumbass coaches simply didn't give a fuck. On top of that, they stopped giving him any technical advice mid way through the fight, sending him off with bum lines like "swing hard, bite down on your mouthpiece, fuck it". If this were boxing, the fight would have been stopped by either the ref or the corner. But in MMA, the legacy of the early days freak shows is still very much present. There is a lot of talk about the promotion not taking care of the fighters, but no one talks about how way too many teams are shit-for-brains amateurs who don't look out for their guy. The result is careers being shortened and fighters left with permanent damage. It ain't just Diego - there are a lot more like him.

They said that because they knew Emmett had no chance

He's a slow fighter with an overhand, against an all around guy

They could have told him to abandon the boxing and spam legs kicks. Kicks in general. They were landing. How about some takedown attempts ? No they tell him to swing and keep throwing punches

That the thing: if you are not going to stop the fight, at least send your fighter out there with a gameplan.

I don't think he was gassing in 5th. He had a significant lead and was smart enough not to make unnecessary gambles.

"That is true, but not in the 5th round where Emmet had only one option if he wanted to win: to go berserk and hope for a Hail Mary."

I hate talking about fighter pay, but I wonder how much the chance at doubling your money influences the decision for not stopping a fight. When a fighter is getting mauled all fight and has suffered lots of damage, the likelihood of a Hail Mary win is practically impossible, yet the corner almost never stops a fight. Maybe the fighter has already said don’t stop the fight under any circumstances. Who knows?

But that hail mary could have been something less predictable than the boxing that was losing him the fight. That's all that topuria was expecting.
Could've went ham on the low kicks then tried to kick his head off.
There were options. Maybe he could be tried to clinch and trip him. Options were there just doing the same bullshit like a beserker wasn't going to work.it was expected. That's why topuria then grappled him . He knew it was coming

Anyone else thinks Yair lights him up? Top looked good no doubt, but his lack of a kicking game will be his downfall against Yair. Sure he has the chance to catch Yair, but if it is an at range fight, which yair could make it that, I don't see Top winning that battle. But I definitely see Top beating Volk.

I agree with a lot of what you said, but as far as corner work goes, I'm not quite there with you. Different fighters need different approaches. You can only give so much advice before it goes beyond their bandwidth mid fight. I'm not saying Danny Castillo looked like a mastermind last night, but I also don't feel he was just saying mindless gibberish.

With that said, I agree with you somewhat at the same time. Emmett was getting beaten quite severely. I did hear the corner ask a couple times if Emmett was okay though, and ultimately Emmett proved to at least have enough of his wits about him to make a valiant effort in the 5th. I can also appreciate a fan such as yourself showing care for the fighters over entertainment. I feel that a lot of folks forget that these guys are human just like the rest of us and that they have lives, friends, and families outside of MMA. They don't owe bloodthirsty fans shit.

Also Goddard being bad, waiting a full 5 minutes after Emmett's eye is swollen shut to have the doctor come look at it

Difference in MMA vs Boxing is very few times in Boxing does being outclassed leave the door open for a last second victory. As rare as it is in MMA (at the highest levels) it still happens more then in boxing. Also Emmett has one shot KO power and pretty much the whole approach is looking for a one shot KO the entire time.

Emmet was totally sacrificed to Top :p
My lovely gf came over during the first fight on the main card. So of course I had to bail out of the pbp. We got loaded. Drinking and smoking. It was really nice outside last night. So after the fights we just hung out in the backyard enjoying eachother’s company.

Neither one of us was impressed with Emmett’s corner. I would have stopped the fight. Screw bravado, and image. Live to fight another day. Most of these guys will never quit on their own. I’d like to see more corner stoppages. To take another 5 minutes of getting smoked praying to land a Hail Mary is stupid. As opposed to Edwards for instance. He wasn’t getting smoked, so yeah keep going and try to land one perfect strike.

Emmett didnt get dripped left and right not sure where that came from

And Emmetts corner did wise up in the third or 4th and advised him to stay or get into the pocket which is something i was sceaming since round 1 whixh was easiser said. It was his only means with him telegraphing and Topuria being a bit reckless. Emmett missed his big chance in the secpnd amd just missed an opportunity to miss a cery crisp and mean hook to Tops face

Good point. Who knows what corners talk about in the gym. Maybe some of them have been told not to stop the fight.

Have you EVER seen Emmett on the ground on his own? I sure havent

Its becsuse Emmett is a one trick pony....theres only so much you can blame his corner for. The advice was to stay in the pocket.
