Two steps verification on Sherdog WTF??

I feel betrayed. I was told the backup codes could be used to login but there was no option to use my backup code when I was prompted to 2FA login.

It’s still a way to data mine. Collecting data was the 1st thing I thought of too when I 1st saw they were doing this. I mean, of course Xenofro ‘highly recommends’ we do this.. it’s more data for them to sell and dump.

The trick is to use a freshly created email you'll never use for anything else. Usually you only have to do that for dodgy websites, but a(i)ds riddled Sherdog probably qualifies at this point.

Lol. How would know? It's not like the spam will come with a tag that says "Brought to you by Sherdog selling your data." Not selling email lists in the past also doesn't mean they won't sell it in the future. Logic 101. They can't even be bothered typing up a 30 second post explaining their reasoning for the change. Assuming the worst is good policy.

I'm surprised, but maybe not surprised, that anyone is actually falling for this. It clearly has nothing to do with security, as already mentioned, Xenforo itself has no requirement or even mention of 2FA on their own forum. At best, this is at least partially being used to identify active accounts. But there are far easier ways to do that, so I suspect there's a lot more to it. And they have to know it's going to all but kill the site, so the future here sure doesn't look bright.

Enabling this, I gave SD no new info what so ever.

Now if they asked for actual personal info such as name, or others it would be a big no.
But asking to send a code to an email they had for almost 20 years? No real concern from me.

What’s involved exactly? Do they just send a code to your email and you have to type that code in to confirm the pass word?

Just what I experienced

Go to your user page by clicking your name and click the password/security link.
Then ENABLE "Two-step-verification"
[I think you have to enter your current password at some point, so be prepared to do that.]
Go to wherever you receive Sherdog emails., open the message, and copy the code.
The message will tell you what to do next; it's straightforward.

The last thing is that Sherdog will pop up a screen with 10 codes on it. Copy them manually and save them somewhere.

@Substance Abuse @Kowboy On Sherdog I was worried about this thing when it first came up. But when I found about the 30 days aspect, it was INSTANT

What is worth a good chunk of change is emails that you can prove are actively being used with high open rates, which ours will have since we are forced to open them due to 2FA.

They just made all the data much more valuable and sellable is all.

Well I will wait and see. If my email suddenly gets a lot of spam or newsletters or what ever... after not gotten anything unsolicited for 20 years I know why.
That would make me consider if its worth to stay here.

I am sure most people complaining has several SoMe and had their data sold for years.
