Carter froze assets and then made the deal (see Algiers Accords), and his guy was doing the legwork (Warren Christopher). I mean, they were released at almost the last literal minute of Carter's presidency. He worked hard to get it done before he left office, and obviously he didn't think it was right to leave the new president such a crisis. I don't see how Reagan has any claim to any credit here. Unless, like I mentioned, he interfered with negotiations before the election, which would be nasty and treasonous, but definitely in Reagan's wheelhouse.

Carter wasn't great at managing capitol hill, but he is still one of my favorite politicians. I liked the man. As a ten year old I liked Reagan. Political beliefs that are worthy evolve.
