Trouble sleeping after BJJ?

I would work on relaxation meditation. In high school I learned this series involving breathing that puts me to sleep instantly

1) What do you guys do to relax after BJJ if laptop or TV is unrecommended? Some said read a book, while others say don't.

Getting to sleep right after physical activity in general is often hard, it's not confined to BJJ or martial arts in general or whatever. You're just going to be keyed up.

Computers, TV, anything with a lit screen seems generally to be discouraged by actual medical types. I think it's usually blamed on the backlight? I personally also find it's easier to keep getting onto something new surfing the internet in bed or whatever - whereas a book is limited in content and frequently linear. It's just too easy to say "I'll put out the light once I finish this thread/article/whatever".

Some people read before bed, some don't. I usually read before bed. I favour something that's familiar - maybe a book I've already read, or maybe a piece of nonfiction about something I already know a decent bit about. It's probably a bad idea to read fiction you haven't read before, too much of a chance you'll stay up late reading it.

If you can, maybe try to psychologically divide your "sleep space" from non-sleep activities. Don't just spend casual time lying on your bed, don't have a TV in your room if you can avoid it, etc.

Huh, I'm going to try the cold shower thing and see if it helps me get to sleep earlier after a late training session. Interesting idea.

For me, it's usually my mind that keeps going, which is why I stay off of the computer. I'm also a read-before-bed type, but I almost never read real books any more... I don't even have a bedside light in my sleeping area (which I call The Vault, and you'd understand why if you saw it), so since it's pitch black I couldn't read a book if I wanted to.

I know this sounds counter to "don't use the computer", but I use the Kindle Reader app on my iPad. I set the background to black and turn the brightness down as far as possible (btw I've tried this on my Nexus 7 tablet, too, but the iPad colour/brightness is better for reading before bed). I read something that doesn't require a lot of mental focus: I just finished Walter Isaacson's bio of Ben Franklin, and am now reading a Thomas Jefferson bio.

Oh, and here's the key for me if I read before bed. The minute I feel at all sleepy, I put the iPad down and go to sleep. I have a window of less than five minutes to do this, so I try to do nothing more than finish the paragraph or maybe the page that I am on. If I miss this window, it can take me another couple of hours to get to sleep, and I might as well keep reading. I ran some experiments over a couple of weeks once I discovered this, and it seems to hold true for me consistently.

Anybody else experience that?

Marijuana.

If it doesn't relax you then you're smoking fake shit.

Just curious, I have had a bunch of wrestling coaches say they don't sleep on their back. The goal of wrestling is to be off your back, so many wrestlers are uncomfortable off their back. Personally, I sleep on my stomach. I have never, and can never, fall asleep on my back.

Do you guys who have BJJ backgrounds first sleep on your back? Just a random thing I thought of today. Every wrestler I asked said they slept on their stomach.

just out of curiosity, what academy do you train out of TS?
ill be in sac this weekend and im look for a place to train for day or 2

I remember I had this issue when I first started training. I would shrimp out of my blankets and do some Ginastica Natural movements to get out of bed in the morning.

I had this before, but not anymore. I don't really know why, but I suspect me getting more relaxed, lazier and more technical has something to do with it.

This thread is probably of some interest: http://www.sherdog.net/forums/f12/bjj-insomnia-1301487/

I sleep on my side, but started doing that way before I started training. I never understood people being able to sleep on their stomach or back.

I think you should try something like this: avoid heavy food, eat light things before go to bed, hot shower and sleep in dark places, with no sound... It helps a lot!!

been having a real hard time sleeping lately after bjj, it really is the worst, like 2-3 hours a night before I have to goto work for a 24 hour shift (doctor), if im lucky and theres some downtime I can grab a nap but its rare

I used to go the melatonin, ZMA, even valerian route, but now it doesn't seem to work, I might doze off by 1230am and then wake up by 2am until 5am (need to be up by 7am)

what works for every one else? I want to try the readin and no tv before bed, guess it cant be in the same room I sleep in though

I must be an outlier, night class ends at 830pm and I have trouble staying awake after my shower. Then I sleep like a baby. But I also yawn during rolls so who knows whats wrong with me.

It’s very normal at the beginning of your bjj journey, if bjj it’s for you, this stuff gets in your head and can’t think of anything else besides rolling and what you did at class, it will pass after maybe a couple of years lol... unless you got some sleeping pills, your going to have to go through this...

Back sleeping is for power naps, stomach sleeping is for good night sleeeping

Wow, old post.

But yeah after my late classes (8pm class, puts me home at 10 then I have to shower and eat), vaporizing some marijuana really does do the trick for me. But it's been a habit of mine for about 6 years now, a pre-sleep ritual if you will.
Just finding something that works for you to make bedtime routine out of should help your brain relax and get ready for rest.

A good stretch/cool down after training is essential. It will help your body transition into recovery mode plus relax your brain/body/muscles.
