You're being flippant but it's absolutely wielded and taken as an insult. There's very few things subject to more ridicule and stigma regardless of any (extremely) recent changes in legal framework. The real shame is that there's still so many closeted, repressed and self-loathing brothers out there who care what people think.

There is actually a reason I used to do that, but this thread doesn't call for it. The gays the OP is talking about are mostly a bunch of middle-aged, burly, lumberjack type motherfuckers who consider and remember when "queer" was a derogatory slur; probably lean conservative on a lot of issues too.
