TRAINING DAY Ordered to Pilot at CBS; Antoine Fuqua to Direct Pilot

CBS is adding another reboot to its pilot roster. The network has handed out a pilot order to a reboot of 2001 feature film Training Day, The Hollywood Reporter has learned.

Described as a reimagining that begins 15 years after the film left off, CBS' Training Day centers on an idealistic young African-American police officer who is appointed to an elite squad of the LAPD where he is partnered with a seasoned, morally ambiguous Caucasian detective. The roles were played by Ethan Hawke and Denzel Washington in the feature film. The drama landed at CBS in a competitive situation in August, earning a hefty pilot-production commitment from the network.

Former LAPD detective Will Beall (Castle, Gangster Squad) will pen the script and exec produce alongside Antoine Fuqua, who directed the feature film and will serve in the same capacity on the CBS pilot. Jerry Bruckheimer and his Warner Bros. Television-based banner will exec produce.

CBS' Training Day sequel has found its leading man. Emmy- and Golden Globe-nominee Bill Paxton has been tapped to topline the network's drama pilot based on the 2001 feature film of the same name, The Hollywood Reporter has learned.

Described as a reimagining that begins 15 years after the 2001 film left off, the reboot centers on an idealistic young African-American police officer who is appointed to an elite squad of the LAPD where he is partnered with a seasoned, morally ambiguous detective.

Paxton will make his broadcast series regular debut and star as Frank Rourke, a veteran LAPD cop who heads up the Special Investigation Section (SIS), a unit that goes after the worst of the worst. He lives by the law of the jungle and believes that real courage is the will to chase the bad guys where the law won’t. Needless to say, Frank isn’t too keen to be babysitting a new trainee, Kyle Craig (uncast). Denzel Washington earned an Oscar win for his leading role as seasoned detective Alonzo Harris in the 2001 feature. Ethan Hawke co-starred as the young cop.

Former LAPD detective Will Beall (Castle, Gangster Squad) will pen the script and exec produce alongside Antoine Fuqua, who directed the feature film.

Training Day sequel would not be complete without another young hottie doing full frontal like Eva Mendes did.

Katrina Law (Arrow, Spartacus) has been cast opposite Bill Paxton in CBS’ drama pilot Training Day, a present-day reimagining of Antoine Fuqua’s acclaimed 2001 feature.

Set 15 years after the film left off, the TV show, written by Will Beall, centers on an idealistic young African-American police officer, Kyle Craig, is appointed to an elite squad of the LAPD where he is partnered with seasoned, morally ambiguous detective Frank Rourke (Paxton).

At least I have a legit reason to watch the show now.

It is going to be on CBS. If you saw the movie, there is no way a show on network can do the movie any kind of justice. You wont be getting any flesh scenes from Katrina Law which is what we have all been waiting.

To be fair, it is not like we did not get a ton of them on Spartacus.

Memories.

It's going to be interesting seeing Bill Paxton given this much time and material to develop a character.

Mother of God it was bad. So bad. It was worse than I thought it would be.
Makes you wonder how Lethal Weapon managed to pull it off?

Everything about that show has been surprisingly good. I love Riggs, Murtaugh, their captain, the wife, the kids, the memory of Maggie Sawyer, the therapist, etc...

It all just works.

They have better writing.

When I saw the Lethal Weapon previews, I thought Clayne Crawford was a terrible choice, and wow was I wrong. I should have known better because I know he's a fine actor from his performance in Rectify, but I thought he was a bad fit, and I was wrong. They write well for him and he delivers. Right out of the gate they embraced the characters we know and love and didn't try and reinvent the wheel. Riggs is broken but deadly. Murtaugh is cautious and funny but tough. Go.

Training Day has a much easier premise, even with the spin, but the writing in the premier was strictly amateur hour. Paxton isn't really that great an actor but he's a hell of a lot better than what we saw; they're giving him garbage. And the climax to the episode felt like a parody, I can't believe someone approved that script, or the casting choices, or the wardrobe.

the memory of Maggie Sawyer

Second quoting this because man, did they nail this. They have great writing.

I took one look at him in the trailer, and was like "...nah, son..." but holy shit have I never been happier to be wrong about a show.

Agreed. It's very well done.

First episode was blah. Bill Paxton was pretty good and very charming though.

Aside from being wrong about Clayne, I was also wrong about Wayans as Murtaugh.

I just wish they would showcase more of Riggs being a badass or how he is a "lethal weapon." In some of the episodes, he just seems normal-ish.

I wasn't sold initially, but there was enough for me to give it a chance. Glad I did. The funnies are genuinely funny too.

Rush Hour bad?
