Hi

I have a BJJ tournament coming up this Sunday. I am competing at 85.5kg for nogi and 88.5kg for gi. However, I've been desperately trying to cut weight to 85.5kg and the scales appear to be stubborn. This morning after a hard cardio session at the gym I was 87.3kg, however, tonight, after a training/sparring session the scales put me at between 89-90kg. I feel like with the deadline getting closer it's really putting the pressure on me to cut out even more food. I'm eating around 1700 calories a day and exercising usually twice a day (high intensity). Shall I just move up a weight (even though I'm only 5ft9)? Or is there something I could do to cut my weight?

Thanks for all the help in advance

Much appreciated!

Either the scale is wrong, or you are full of shit. No one is going to eat 1700kcals, go two high intensity training sessions, and gain 5lbs at your size. Could be a number of things:

The scale is wrong - happens all the time. Cheap scales arent always accurate.

You arent training as hard as you think you are - What you call high intensity, others may think is pretty weak. At your weight, a high intensity practice should lead to at least 4-5lbs weight loss.

What you think is 1700cals is way more. At your weight, 1700kcals is a deficit for sure. You shouldnt be gaining on this kind of calorie intake.

You are a moron and are eating complete shit and drinking a ton of water during a weight cut. Some people are just dumb. They drink a gallon of water, eat 4 top ramens, then wonder why they are huge.

From what you are saying, it sounds like the scale is inaccurate. Maybe try to move the scale a little or put new batteries in. Might even want to check by putting 200lbs of weight on there and see what it says.

Post here what you ate yesterday and today. List everything! Dont BS us here either if you can tell us what your complete intake was over the past 48 hrs we can get get you to your target.

You should have started this weight cut 2-3 weeks out, and you will probably feel like shit on sunday, but you can get there if you want to.

Just go up in weight for this tournament. Having less energy and strength because of depleting yourself isnt going to win you any matches.
Skill is usually a bigger factor in grappling/jits anyway. In my experience, competing against bigger guys is easier, because they rely more on strength than technique.
The only tournament I ever lost weight in to compete at a lower weightclass I was drained of energy and lost my first match on points against a much stronger stocky guy.

Losing weight is more a long term thing - cutting weight in my opinion should only be done with day-before weigh ins.
Just aim for losing weight for the next tournament coming up and do it in a healthy way - so it wont affect your performance negatively.

Hey I don't know what your eating and what not but if everything is accurate that you said if your eating too mich sodium atm that could be a huge problem and that's why your body holding on to water.

Yesterday I ate:

Two chicken fillets (110 calories each) with steamed vegetable
Two burgers (200 calories each) with steamed vegetables
Three bananas
3 breakfast bars (150 calories)
A pear
An orange
Two diet protein shakes with water (400 calories)

That's more than 1700 calories. To be fair it is early here and I have not had any caffeine so my math could be off.

Are you using any seasoning on anything? Get rid of the breakfast bars, more than likely they are full of sugar and salt. What is in the diet protein shake?

Suggestion of what I would do. You will get hungry but you should have started earlier.

Breakfast - egg whites with peppers, onions and no seasoning that contains sodium with small 8 oz protein shake (water and protein only)

Lunch - 1 chicken breast and veggies no seasoning that contains salt

Dinner - same as lunch

Use limited fresh fruit, a chicken breast, or small protein shake in between meals when needed.

Do you know what your calorie intake requirement to maintain your weight? If its close to 2200-2500, 1700 isnt enought to drop 10 pounds in 5 days unless you dehydrate, IMO. Good luck

First, did you lose weight or gain weight the day you ate all of this? If so, then you are on the right track.

My guess is that you are not. I see people try to diet down, cut weight, etc, then I look at their diet and I see stuff like what you post here. Then I cringe, and I know what I tell them will alienate them and they wont listen.

What you are eating is healthy. All healthy foods arent always the the best way to lose weight. In fact, many are detrimental. I see the amount of fruits, shakes, and breakfast bars you are taking in, and its probably no wonder why you arent losing weight. Yes, those things are considered healthy by most people. They are also like fucking pitbulls when it comes to water retention.

Calories in vs calories out works great if you have 3 months to lose weight. Basing a weight cut on only calories in vs calories out doesnt work very well.

Okay, well I woke up this morning and after going to the toilet I weighed 87.5kg. This afternoon, since going to the gym and eating lunch, I have put on around 0.7kg. The deadline for changing weight classes is tomorrow. Do you think I should just move up a weight division? I will be around 5kg lighter than the guys in it (and also A LOT shorter).

Thanks

Can you weigh in a day early in this tournament? If so, you can sweat out the water on Friday, weigh in saturday morning and hydrate all day Sat. If not, you probably should compete up. You will feel better. 10 pounds is a good deal of weight to cut over a few days if this is your first time and with no help.

Is this your first tournament and what division will you be in? If it is white belt and your first tournament, compete at your natural weight and just enjoy yourself. you will already be amped up and nervous enough without worrying about all the other stuff that can come with cutting weight, like upset stomach, gas pains, shitting yourself, etc...

The weigh in on the day unfortunately. It is my second tournament at white belt. In the gi I am meant to be competing at 88.30kg, but may move up to 94.30kg (BIG JUMP). And in nogi I am meant to be competing at 85.50kg, but I will probably have to compete at 91.50kg. The first time I competed was at 85kg, however, that was two months ago and I have been heavy lifting and bulking...

At this point, calories aren't that important.

Eat as few carbs as possible, drink at least a gallon of water or more tomorrow, then cut back water on Thursday and as little as possible on Friday (depending on weight).

Cutting out the carbs, and cutting out sodium on Thurs and Fri should easily help you lose 5+ lbs (2+ kilos) until Saturday morning and you won't even be dehydrated.

Tournament is on Sunday, so should he delay a day, right?

Oh, Holt, you mean, mean man.

I wasnt referring to TS, just in general, I get this a lot from people. Although now looking at TS new responses, I dont think he is being very honest with himself .

Thread starter better take a long look in the mirror. I mean, it would be a goddamned miracle if he could see the scale, past that huge gut.
