In the Emperors name they did it! The map they showed reminds me a lot of Supreme Commander 2, but thankfully Biomes will be diverse.

Here are the factions at launch. I was hoping for T'au day one, but you know they'll drip out tons of DLC's.

Lead campaigns across the void with four radically distinct factions, each forged with their own unique array of lore-inspired gameplay features, devastating weaponry, apocalyptic war machines, and methods of warfare.

Space Marines: Genetically enhanced weapons of war, these warriors are few in number but near unmatched in power. Clad in sacred armour and wielding the Imperium’s most deadly weaponry, each strikes with devastating and unyielding precision.

Orks: Brutish hordes of destruction, they are unrelenting, countless and live for war. Storming the battlefield in endless mobs, they brandish unpredictable weapons and clanking war machines - all driven by the primal power of the WAAAGH!

Aeldari: An ancient and waning xenos race, who once ruled the stars, but now rail against their certain fate. Swift and elusive, they strike with psychic precision and elegant weaponry, exploiting weakness before vanishing into shadow.

Astra Militarum: The massed ranks of humanity’s largest fighting force are a bulwark of flesh and steel. Their legions of soldiers' march beneath the roar of battle-tanks and the thunder of artillery, grinding enemies into ruin with disciplined fury and sheer determination.

This is what I'm super pumped about, customizing our armies. I'm assuming this applies to other factions, gonna lose a lot of time in this!!

CUSTOMISE YOUR WAR MACHINE

Step into battle with renowned sub-factions and warlords from the Warhammer 40,000 universe - or forge your own custom army with unparalleled set of customisation options that bring tabletop freedom to life.

Personalise Your Army: Name your warband, choose its sacred colours, and emblazon its regiments with an array of iconography that strikes fear into the hearts of enemies.

Modify Your Warriors: Tailor your faction’s combat philosophy for both campaign and battle, arming them with your own unique fusion of devastating tactical abilities, signature traits, and arcane wargear.

I also love how they're describing the push and pull from Helldivers 2, where as a community we fight for control of certain areas.

WAGE WAR ON A GALACTIC SCALE

Wage war across a galactic sandbox where there is no peace, only war. Expand your empire turn by turn; capturing planets, upgrading fleets, and managing your war economy as you carve a path through the stars to dominance.

Fight to determine the fate of entire worlds. Conquer and develop strongholds, bombard enemies from orbit, and deploy your armies to the ground to engage in breathtaking real-time battles over planetary installations and regions.

And when the threat becomes too great, consider unleashing apocalyptic weaponry to erase entire planets from existence.
@Thrawn33 Exterminatus confirmed??

With their new engine featuring asset and terrain destruction, this is looking like a banger, and the injection of life Total War needed. I was already excited about Medieval 3 being announced, but I'm so glad 40K is next up!!

Coupled with mods, this has so much potential!

Indeed! We also have Space Marine 3 in development, Dark Hersey, a fully voiced CRPG from Owlcat (Rogue Trader team) "coming soon". Mechanicus 2, Boltgun 2, and there's some Roguelike called Warhammer Survivors, which looks like Vampire Survivors reskin, but it combines 40k and Fantasy.

Outside Space Marine 3, all aforementioned games are coming next year.

With DOW4, Total War 40K, that live action series Cavill is cooking up, and a new series of books on the Scouring (Post Horus Heresy, just after Big E gets puts on the throne in 30K) coming next week, it's the perfect time to become a fan of this crazy universe.

Beat Rogue Trader earlier in the year, and really enjoyed it, so my excitement for Dark Heresy is quite up there. Looks much darker. Hoping Owlcat nails it.

So much 40k content that a fan can find something to get excited for.

I'm so excited for that and their Expanse game, which invokes Mass Effect.

Rogue Trader has two new DLC's in the works too. I only played with their first DLC, Void Shadows. It added so much to our ship, as we could explore more areas. It felt nitertwined with the main game. Did you play Lex Imperialis?

I hear at least one of their new DLC's will add to the final act/final antagonists, which is really needed, and has the most room for improvement/expansion.

Dark Heresy sounds really intriguing with their investigation system, being compared to Pentiment's. I don't know if you ever played that, but you do investigations there as well. You never really know if you made the right decision, and there are narrative shaping consequences regardless.

There's so much great 40K content coming it makes me giddy lol.

I’m a bit surprised at the lack of Chaos Marines as a starting faction. I figured Necrons, Tau and Tyranids would be factions later on down the pipe, but figured the starting factions would be similar to the OG Dawn of War 20+ years ago where it was Space Marines, Chaos Space Marines, Orks and Eldar from day one, followed by various other factions like Imperial Guard, Necrons etc in the expansions in the years that followed.

Also, I wonder how much breathing room this and Dawn of War 4 will try to give each other so as to not cannibalize each other’s player base and sales.

I NEED terminators. At least one nterminator. If they have a space hulk level w/genestealers, will shriek with joy but that's probably a pipe dream.

Scouring gonna be fun.

Terminators are confirmed.

But there's already a couple of dedicated Space Hulk games.

Deathwing an FPS game.

And a turn based Space Hulk.

I swear I at least heard the devs talking about exploring Space Hulks in an IGN interview? This is from a search that google's AI pulled.

"Creative Assembly has indicated that abandoned Space Hulks, derelict stations, and Craft Worlds will be key locations or features in the newly announced game Total War: Warhammer 40,000."

I'm curious if it's just some auto resolve thing, or if we can have smaller strike teams go aboard.

This is more info from a German website interview with the devs, loosely translated by some guy on reddit

Galaxy Map
The galaxy map functions as a hybrid between a campaign selection menu and meta-progression. You don't actually move armies or end turns here, instead you're given an overview of the galaxy at large and offered several campaigns to take part in.

Those campaigns are split into three types: Full campaigns, short campaigns, and singular decisive battles. Full campaigns will be closest to traditional Total War, set in a full star system meant to be longer and finished over multiple sessions. Short campaigns will feature only a few planets and be intended to be completed in a single evening. Singular battles are self explanatory. So it's a "choose your commitment" type system

Campaigns can either be generated, or narrative. So there will be campaigns set in handcrafted systems/locations from the lore, with narrative objectives and factions, and also campaigns that are more randomized

Completing campaigns carries over effects and changes to the galaxy layer and potentially future campaigns. The example they gave was helping the Imperial Guard in one campaign leads to allied Imperial Guard forces showing up to support you throughout battles in your next campaign

It's unclear how much management will be done at this layer, but the article does seem to hint that you'll manage the systems you've taken in campaigns

Campaign Layer
The campaign layer sounds like it will function like a traditional total war campaign. You have armies, fleets, resources, infrastructure to manage, and you move them around the map

Campaigns will feature multiple planets in single systems/sectors. Planets will be different biomes and states of war (some may have ongoing battles, be hive planets, etc)

Planets will be separated by space (seemingly connected by lanes, if the gameplay preview is anything to go by), which will be traversed by your fleets. Similar to the role the sea played in previous total war's

Upgrading fleets and fighting space battles was mentioned, but those details aren't being revealed yet

Planets
Each planet will function like a little mini total war campaign map.

Continents are stated to be about the size of provinces in current Total War. Armies move around here like a normal Total War map, where you move them around on a board essentially.

Instead of building cities you are mostly relegated to building outposts and bases. Cities will still play a part however, they will be more like independent entities that you occupy and then manage from there instead of building and upgrading yourself. Constructing buildings and recruiting units in them was mentioned, so it seems like it'll be a similar to current city management just more horizontal rather than vertical.

Your fleets can interact with planets by doing orbital bombardment, exterminatus, etc.

I really like what I'm hearing here with the campaign. A mix of generative and hand crafted scenarios in the could keep things fresh. The progression will be the key, but it sounds very promising.

I hope they add fleet combat at some point. I'm a little leary on the starting factions too. With the Astra and Space Marine chapters being separate but aligned factions, it only gives 3 opposing ones to start.

I love the Eldar and Orks, but I'm really surprised Chaos aren't included right off the bat.

I'm sure the they, along with the Tyranids, T'au and Necrons will join the war as DLC. Hopefully there's some overarching narrative planned for their arrival.
