Nintendo Top 20 NES games from the Rolling Stone

My neighborhood friend and I owned or rented most of these games. He had Dragon Quest III. Back in those days, it was just called Dragon Warrior III. The game that sticks out is Excitebike. Early on in our friendship, I go over to his house. Soon enough, we're playing NES games. I may have recently been gifted a NES for Christmas and had played a NES game or two before. Mind you, I've played all of the 1980's consoles up to that time: Atari, Coleco, Commodore. Then we start playing Excitebike. Excitebike was the first game on the Nintendo where I took note and said to myself, wow, this Nintendo is visually better than the competition. But after playing it out for a few weeks, we never went back to it. Likely not in my top 20, but certainly an influential title.

We had another neighborhood friend who had the more exotic NES games, like Gumshoe and Track with the running pad. The fact of the matter is that we played a good proportion of the NES portfolio, in real time, as the games were released to buy or rent. Everyone had a Nintendo back then.

Mario 2 sits in the pantheon with the best. Adventure Island holds a special place. Baseball Stars. I remember renting Adventures in the Magic Kingdom all summer one year. Batman was great. The Black Bass might crack my top 20. Casino Kid was an early role playing game. Double Dragon II. Duck Tales. G.I. Joe. Ikari Warriors. Jackal. Rad Racer. Ninja Turtles II. A few more here and there, if we're talking the best. And I think we are.

I still remember playing and enjoying Excitebike, Double Dragon 2, Jackal, and Ninja Turtles 2. It's a timeless era for video games.

Everyone has different tastes but not including Tysons Punch out is off .

Top 5 that I liked playing more then the overall better games . Ring King really wasn’t great but it was so fun in an addictive way , Nintendo had those games .

1. Tysons Punch out
2. Ring King
3. Gun Smoke
4 . World Runner
5. Renegade

( Silver Surfer was awesome to and had the best music in NES lineup it wasn’t as smooth playing bc it was so difficult )

Punch Out was #10 on the Rolling Stone list.

If you're just speaking in general, I agree Punch Out should be a consensus favorite.

Dragon Quest but no Final Fantasy? Little League Baseball? Lolo?

How dare they omit old Byroo Biwee!

Besides that, the List is solid for the most part.

My fave when I was young was a sci-fi game called Flashback. It didn’t feel like anything else with tough jump and ledge (grab, hoist) mechanics that I recall when looking back.

Not sure I’ve ever seen anyone talk about it so it being unlisted is expected. Personal top 20 though, it would be way up there.
