Agree/Disagree?

I just caught the last 30 minutes of Dune on BBC America (I've seen it entirely before) and holy shit, what a travesty of a movie. I can't imagine a good director being able to make something so terrible....wtf.

I've never liked Lynch's stuff, and I'm a Criterion type of guy.

I can tell by the thumbnail that the video would be a waste of my time.
You either like his work or don't, but there are two movies even his critics enjoy which are The Elephant Man and The Straight Story.

not watching the video... to not understand Lynch is one thing but to say he sucks is objectively wrong...

spoken like an offended hipster...

just kidding brah!

I love Lynch. I've never thought much about his films in terms of trying to figure their meaning and subtext and symbolism and all that shit. But his shit is usually packed with brilliant characters and scenes anyway

the video shouldn't be taken serious though... ha

but can we talk about how terrible Dune is/was. why the fuck is it so bad? is Lynch just not good with big budget epic style narrative?

Lynch's only works that don't inspire terrible boredom are the first 2 seasons of Twin Peaks, and that's only because the network was holding his hand.

I really liked that dune. The Toto soundtrack is really good too... The film has the lynchian touch and is available to a mainstream 80's audience unlike a lot of his efforts. Lynch fans expect vague, symbolic and obscure attempts at story telling and dune was a pre written "epic".

It almost seems like lynch was chosen to make the film and was paid big but wasn't that passionate about it. He cast his usual people or person and just ran with it.

This. It's about the ride, not a linear story. His shit is dope.

I don't care for Lynch's films, but he certainly doesn't "suck" as a filmmaker.

Not a fan. If you have to spend years trying to figure out what a movie is even about, then it's a shit movie imo. There's a difference between using symbolism and not having a coherent story to tell.

Mullholand Drive was fantastic.

I do agree some of his movies are stupid.

The baby scene in eraserhead tho is crazy

Or you might just be stupid. His movies you have to think about which is great if you are capable.

Lost Highway is pretty simple to piece together. Now, Mulholland Drive is pretty complex but my GF at the time was able to give me a pretty good run down of it right after.

I can tell by the thumbnail that the video would be a waste of my time.

His stuff is too variable. He used to be my favorite director and FWWM used to be my favorite movie. They are still up there.

TP season 3 was hot shit. Mid-season 2 TP was better.

I really liked FWWM, TP S1-2, LH, MD, BV, and Eraserhead I only saw once. EM was meh but not really a Lynch movie. The rest kind of sucked.

But his great movies are great.

One huge letdown I had was watching Fellini's Satyricon. Lynch copied to many of the gestures from that movie and put them into FWWM.

I used to feel that way about lynch before I discovered the secret to enjoying his work.

Basically, you have to stop trying to "figure it out"

He doesn't want you to figure it out. In fact, when something starts making some kind of metaphorical sense, he'll actually change it to conflict with that metaphor.

Stop thinking there is a hidden meaning. Stop trying to find it.

All you need to do is sit back and let him take you on a ride. You're going to see gorgeous cinematography, hear haunting music, and watch scenes that will evoke powerful emotional reactions.

Sometimes you have a dream that doesn't make sense, but you usually don't say "that dream sucked" because you have different expectations for your dreams than you do movies.

This is the key to enjoying lost highway, Mulholland drive, Eraserhead, basically his weirder stuff.

He does have some "normal" stuff that everyone can enjoy. The elephant man, the straight story,.... Twin peaks and blue velvet kind of walk the line between his normal and his weird stuff
