Tony Gwynn passed away

Good thing we dont judge his career like we do NFL greats.

"He cant be a great. He didnt win a title."

Is he really the all time assists leader as a PG at SD State? I didn't know he was that good of a bball player

He would have hit .400 if not for the strike.

A bunch of historic things would have happened that year if not for the stupid strike.

RIP to one of the all time greats and one of the best hitters ever. He was an even better person too.

"Anybody can hit a homerun."

- Ty Cobb

Ty Cobb said a lot of things. And he was just wrong about the value of a HR. But I don't want to derail this thread. With or without power, Gwynn was clearly one of the greatest hitters, not only of his generation but of all-time.

not really

Ya really. Why is Tim Brown not in and Lynn Swan is? Lynn doesnt have half the stats Brown does. I think Frank Gore is a HOFer. Someone on the radio said he shouldnt get in before Roger Craig cause Craig has the rings. Even though Gore has shattered Craig's records.

Batting avg is overrated. That being said, didnt he average like 40 strike outs a season? That is remarkable. There are people who do that in a month. He had ONE three strikeout game his whole career. He has a 400 batting avg against Maddux and Smoltz. And a 312 avg against Tom Glavin. Thats two almost three HOF pitchers.

He was definitely the best hitter of his generation and the man was all class. Some Tony Gwynn trivia:

In two-strike counts, Gwynn hit .302. That's a statistic that's only been measured since 1988, and since then, Gwynn's mark is easily the best. Wade Boggs, next on the list, hit .260 in two-strike counts. (Via @Castrovince)

Of the 12 top batting seasons since the expansion era began in 1961, Gwynn owns four of them. Those are: .368 in 1995, .370 in 1987, .372 in 1997 and .394 in the strike-shortened 1994 season. (via Baseball Reference)

In 1995, Gwynn struck out only 15 times in 535 at-bats. That's insane. As Aceball Stats points out, 27 current MLB players have already struck out than more than 15 times in June.

Gwynn's rookie season, in which he played in 54 games, is the only year of his career that he didn't hit .300. He hit .289. His 19 consecutive .300 seasons are second to only Ty Cobb, who had 23.

Gwynn's career .338 batting average is of a different era. As Yahoo Sports' Jeff Passan notes, every other hitter with an average of .338 or above started his career before 1940.

Gwynn led his league in batting average eight times. The only other player to win more batting titles was Cobb, who earned 12 of them.

Gwynn hit .300 or better for 19 consecutive seasons, the longest run in National League history. (Cobb holds the American League mark with 23.)

Gwynn has more career doubles (543) than strikeouts.

Gwynn was a great hitter and classy guy.Although he never batted 400 for one full season, he did bat over 400 for a full 162 game stretch, encompassing all of the strike shortened 94 season.
From July 27th 1993 through May 13, 1995, Gwynn appeared in 162 games, and had 704 plate appearances. He had 624 at-bats with 251 hits (.402 BA), as well as 15 HR, 100 RBI, 121 runs scored, a .457 OBP and a .563 SLG.

Used to see him everyday as a freshman at SDSU, my dorm was next to the baseball stadium. Not only one of the best hitters ever, but a genuinely nice guy. He'd talk to any of us students like we were good friends. Respect

Such a smooth efortless swing. And an eye to match. RIP.

Gwynn was a class act and an amazing hitter but anyone who says he was a better hitter than Bonds is a fool.

One funny thing about Gwynn is he did hit a lot in to double plays, I dont know if enough to lead the league, but it was significant enough to kinda be annoying for some of the local fans.

Damn, just heard this. He always seemed like one of the few genuinely nice guys.
