The unfortunate truth is that the JBD, an absolutely unpredictable violent savage that was El Cucuy is long gone. Probably being in the tail end of his prime, Gaethje literally beat what was left of it out of him. Tony actually tweeted that he had started his camp for Khabib just after the new year, the fight fell through, was rebooked, finally got Justin in May. I have to wonder if trying to stay in fight shape for that long window took a toll on his body. Ferg being true to himself as a self-saboteur, was in/out/in camp for 17 weeks, add the fact that he was north of 35, idiotically did 2 weight cuts, honestly no wonder he was only competitive with Justin for just over 2 rounds.
Amazingly impressive that everyone seems to forget that Justin almost got finished at the end of the 2nd frame, he gets dropped by an uppercut, was badly hurt and staggered up retreating from Ferg going for the kill as the horn sounded.
Tony was just lucky he didn’t face Khabib instead of Gaethje, at that point IMO Tony would’ve been repeatedly taken down, mauled and probably have been finished in the championship rounds. That being said , if the fight happened earlier in their careers Ferg would’ve had a great chance to beat Khabib, Abdulmanap was smart to allow Khabib to develop, get 5 round experience before taking the risk of fighting elite guys. Most people don’t remember that early Khabib didn’t have the greatest gas tank, had trouble finishing when he broke into the rankings, also h his stand up was still extremely rudimentary and was a liability if he couldn’t get the TD.
In the grand scheme UFC through Conor McGregor simultaneously catapulted the Irishman into superstardom and fucked the LW division over for years on end, effectively stalling an entire era of fighters. As the fans, we didn’t get some of the historically greatest matchups at 155 and had an obnoxious character rammed down our throats in spades. I’ll admit that adding Covid was the perfect storm and it wasn’t met to be.
War Ferg, a man unfortunately remembered for the fights he lost not won.
His prime run of violence was absolutely nothing short of spectacular.
