His M:I series alone elevates him above the 80's action icons this forum fetishizes, particularly the last 3 installments. And then he's got underrated sci-fi masterpieces in Minority Report, War of the Worlds and Edge of Tomorrow. From the tense urban noir of Collateral to the brilliant character study of Magnolia, Cruise has blessed us with some of the finest movies of the past 20 years.
Real talk. Until the Jack Reacher sequel he had like a 97 year span of no bad movies at all. Not necessarily all great movies, but nothing bad as in that "WTF, why are YOU in this movie" bad.I always loved the blank stare on people faces when they said they didnt like Tom Cruise and I asked them to name a bad Tom Cruise movie.
Seriously, you could pick a random Tom Cruise movie and Id probably be down to watch it. Say what you want about the man, until he was forced by terrorists to do the Jack Reacher sequel, his ability to notice and understand talent and what it takes to make an entertaining movie might be unparalleled at his level of stardom. You look at the MI series and who he's chosen to direct each installment and you're like "Yeah, that's a good call right there.". I still wonder what Joe Carnahans MI would have been like.
But, I do wish at the moment he'd ground it a little bit and do some more of the dramatic work that he hasnt done in some time.
