Interesting one, if they're keeping Aspinall on the London card, do you think they just got him a bigger name opponent?

Meanwhile, I'm not sure anyone in the UK will care who wins out of Abdurakhimov and Pavlovich, weird fight to stay on that card given the sheer number of British and Irish fighters on the UFC roster.

I have never seen Sergei fight. He's supposed to be really good.

Very interesting indeed that they scrapped the fight between them after it was already established for quite some time but kept both guys on the card. I wonder who Aspinall's new dance partner will be. When I first read the thread title I understood the new matchup to be Tom vs. Sergei which would have been a fantastic showcase of boxing between those two.

As it stands, Tom has some options. He has made it clear that he would love to fight Blagoy but I don't see that happening. Ivanov is on a loss streak, ranked below him & Shamil both, and possibly dealing with personal/health issues? Besides, I don't see the promotion pulling Aspinall only to give him a fight that will do even less for him in the division. You could make the same argument for Walt Harris and Sakai as opponents. Daukaus would be an enticing fight, but that would be one hell of a quick turnaround after getting knocked dead by Lewis. I don't see that at all (plus he said he's focused on helping his brother's fight camp at the moment).

So that just leaves the only ranked unbooked guys as Volkov, Blaydes, and Stipe -- all of which are in the Top 5. Normally I wouldn't say any of them would take a fight against #10 but we just saw Lewis sign a fight with Tai Tuivasa...

Actually that fight made No Sense for Tom. Better for him to fight someone like Chris Barnett or augusto sakai

Pavlovich is not getting into America due to visa things, which I will not discuss on here.

Aspinall vs Barnett makes zero sense, Barnett is nowhere near that high in the heavyweight division.

If they're going to give Barnett a fun fight against a name opponent, Oleinik would make way more sense.

Aspinall would murder Barnett.

I mean, not a bad matchup. Sergei has some potential; dude is like 6'3 with an 83in reach. Not quite 30 yet either. Travel issues and injuries and pandemic has kinda snuffed out his bit of momentum.

Mmmms - so much musical chairs...

Sergei I guess.

Because he lost to Overeem on short notice?

if you couldnt beat overeem at that stage of his career when he was coming of two (t)ko losses back to back, and you are meant to be some knock out monster yourself, then..... well, thats not a good look, hey?

Lol Overeem has been coming off two tko losses back to back many times in his career. That’s literally been his thing since the Pride days. Glass cannon but go off

Shamil is a guy you can look good against because he is so slow, he is beyond slow.. Tom would have looked great in that fight, madness they removed him, it was a good way to make him look good and slick.

Pavlovich is better than Aspinall and I'm willing to die on that hill. Long live the Taisumov of HW!

back to back losses in rings, back to back to back losses in pride, and 2 back to back losses in the ufc.

he sure did make it his thing.

Don't agree with that, Aspinall is a weird one because he has two stupid early-Anderson Silva type losses on his career before he blew up soon after and became hot property.

Still, Aspinall is always talking like he needs more time, like he has to develop - this narrative is very similar to the one employed by Sean O'Malley, but the reality is in the UFC so far he's looked like he's been playing with his food.

He totally overwhelmed Collier and Baudot, and he'll never fight at that level again. Against Arlovski, he dominated him and made it look like a practice session, where the focus was on surprising the wily old vet - and again, it looked so easy for him.

Spivak I thought would be a better contest because he's also relatively young, strong, and has a decent résumé, but he trashed Spivak as well.

I actually would have liked to see Aspinall vs Pavlovich here, but it's a fight I think we'll see down the line.

What I don't get is why Aspinall was climbing the rankings nicely, pitched against a guy 2 places higher, then gets withdrawn from the fight. It seems clear to me that Shamil isn't good enough to compete with either Aspinall or Pavlovich, but what does Aspinall get now that makes more sense than Shamil?

I wonder if he headlines against Volkov, but it's a big step up.
