To make a comeback Werdum just needs to work on his takedowns.

he tried to outbox a guy with superior striking to him, over-extended himself and tried to rush a finish in a championship fight. his general strategy was lacking in professionalism, not just one aspect of his game
 
That's a very tall order for a 37 year old who isn't particularly strong for his division, unlike Maia. Not saying he shouldn't work on his wrestling, but addressing his bad striking defense habits should be a higher priority for him imo
 
Based on what? He took down Cain, Nog, Browne, etc. The only recent opponents he didn't get down were Hunt and Stipe.

He didn't exactly take down Nog or Cain. Nog gave up the takedown because he went for a guilotine. Cain was the opposite -- Cain went for the takedown and he gave it up because he went for a guilotine. In both cases, the decision to let the fight go to the ground wasn't with Werdum.
