I've seen many talked about how Conor was obsessed about the loss and how he is so determined to fight Nate and get his revenge. Or the reason behind why the UFC decided to go with Conor vs Diaz 2,etc.
The reason is simple really, and I have never really bothered to type it out until today, but today watching this interview on youtube, Cruz basically said it for me.
After Conor lost to Nate.... here's what you have to realize:
1. Him facing diaz at 170 AGAIN and losing to diaz AGAIN. there's still going to be an excuse there.... it's at 170, so the excuse is still there for the ufc and for conor if he does loses. That he is just better suited for his 'natural' weight class and not 170.
vs.
2. Having lost to nate, and going back down to his natural weight class, and lose AGAIN, now to a different fighter.
these 2 choices are dramatically different.
If he goes down and loses again... and to ANOTHER fighter. he has now lost 2 consecutive fights vs 2 different fighters in the ufc...what's next? another loss to yet a third fighter?
How can someone be the goat when everyone beats him? it just makes no sense.
However, if he only loses to one person: Nate, and it's at a higher weight class, it's simply not as bad, there's the weight excuse, and so what if he loses to one person. Sometimes a fighter just doesn't do well vs certain other fighters.
What the UFC is doing now is buying time like Cruz said in the interview. they're simply trying to stall and milk as much money as they can off of Conor before he starts losing to everyone he faces- because, at the highest level when you're on the main stage....... the challengers that come for you, you can no longer avoid. (though the UFC does try to help him in this department as much as they can.)
Quite honestly, I'm amazed that a bullshitter like him went as far as he did. Yes his striking is good, but come on, anyone who has watched enough mma knows he is not a complete fighter- unless you simply chose to all of a sudden ignore all the other sides of mma aside from striking (and that's what all the conor bless, head clean off fanatics did.) Fell in love with a product and turned off their brain.
All the stars really did aligned perfectly for Conor. If his striking wasn't good, and if his trash talking and ufc's antics of talking shit and lying about conor's opponents and getting in their head and getting them agitated didn't work, and conor's striking wasn't good enough to put down an over-aggressive over-emotional opponent, then he wouldn't even have gotten to where he is today. He had a lot of help along the way, that is a fact, he skipped many troublesome opponents, and he were presented with 1-2 strong opponents whom in normal circumstances should've beat him but couldn't due to either short notice, etc.
1. Mendes that fought aldo would've beat him, if he didn't have to fight short notice.
2. aldo would've beat him, if he didn't get so rattled by conor's antic and trash talk. or if the UFC did not go on air and lie about aldo's injury and using it to paint a picture to boost conor's image while smearing aldo's. Being the champ, and having your employer choosing someone else over you and doing everything they can to make you look bad in public, that is enough to drive any man crazy. Imagine you're out at a public function with your employer and the boss just kept showing favoritism towards your other co-worker while embarrassing you and using you as an ice break for telling jokes, how would you feel?
so aldo,he went in, charged the second the bell rang (have we ever seen him open like this without feeling his oppponent first?)
Props to Conor for being able to capitalize, but let's not forget, the man has no substance... he will get exposed, and the UFC is simply buying time now.
