There's a local Mexican restaurant I frequent. I almost always order the same thing, chicken soup. It's $10.00. I'm a regular so most of the staff know me and ask as I sit down,
"Chicken soup and water?"
"Yes please"

Today I had a young lady server who I hadn't seen before. She gives me good service and I tip her the same amount that I always do, $3. It's not a lot but it's still a 30% tip. Growing up, 15% was the standard for a good experience but I think that 20% is now the new normal. $2 tip seems kinda crappy so I always do $3.

I swear that she kinda gave me a sour look on my way out after an otherwise pleasant interaction. How much am I supposed to tip you young lady? $5 which is 50% of the meal? Am I not supposed to sit down for a meal unless I order a minimum amount? I like chicken soup. I find a bowl of it quite satisfying. All the other servers know that I order the $10 chicken soup and I always tip $3. Sometimes I am feeling like a wild man and I order two of them. In those cases, I usually tip $4.

In case this makes a difference, I do always ask for a to go container. Not for the soup, which I always finish, but the chips and salsa which I take home and feed to my chickens. It's included with the meal so why not.

I don't like tipping culture for this reason. Just charge me whatever it costs and I'll be on my way. I don't want to be guilt tripped into overpaying.

In before tldr.

Tipping/drip pricing/dynamic pricing etc. is one (are three) of many examples why Anarchism/Libertarianism/Don't Tread On Me/The Invisible Hand of the Market don't work. People like to do unpleasant things to others like 🍇, rob, extort, steal, unalive, enslave, and if allowed to that's what they'll do until society is reduced to a wasteland, so you need to make laws and punishments to stop them. Tipping/drip pricing/dynamic pricing should all be banned and punished with bankruptcy-inducing fines. Thanks for coming to my TED talk.

A sour look could be about a million things. Maybe she wasn't being sour at all. Either way, sounds like that dollar is bugging you more than her.

I know I sound poor. I just don't want to violate the social contract and have her be mad at me. You could be right though. Maybe it was something else and I'm being overly sensitive.

15 percent now. Servers make $15+ an hour here.

Double the first number if 2 digits double first 2 of 3. Used the same system for decent to great service. Poor service i top 10% . Rude service i tip 1 penny as an insult. (Only at a place i dont frequent)

It is getting out of control. The worst are the kiosks where you order all the stuff on the touch screen or you order at the counter and pick up your own food and they still ask for a tip. OR those machines that ask for tip and give 3 options of 18%, 20% or 25%. I mean...18% is the minimum choice? Ridiculous.

I know a lot of peoples working in restaurants or bar.

They all make more money than the average 9to5 workers.

Shitty schedule though.
And sometimes, also shitty job.
Jobs easy. You just need a decent amount of energy and to just be nice. That's literally it.

I was clearing $20-25 an hour off a $2.13 wage. I can only imagine what the hell they're making these days.

What an utterly retarded take. You honestly think that anarchists or libertarians are into enforcing rules onto people for what constitutes acceptable tips? Someone really needs to do a bit more reading on the topic...

Seems like you just wanted to go on a rant and were unsuccessfully attempting to shoehorn it into an unrelated topic.

I don't understand. How much would you have tipped?

Oh, goodie, another tipping thread! We haven’t had one of these in about 72 hours. I was getting worried!

...as a duly elected representative of the rest of the world outside the US.

Just put the full motherfucking price on whatever service you are selling. We will then see this price and make up our mind on whether we wish to purchase said service.

This whole, not knowing who we are and aren't expected to tip and how much is expected, is really confusing and annoying to those that aren't indoctrinated into believing that this utter clusterfuck of a system is actually normal.

20% - went above and beyond
18% - really good service
10% - meh service
0% - picking up my own takeout

$5 flat rate - delivery drivers
