Tiger Woods is playing this week at the Quicken Loans National. How important is it for golf to have him back?

I'm sure it helps the bottom line, but he's not the casual draw he was a decade ago. Not even close.

Extremely important for golf. Glad he's back. Hopefully he can stay healthy.

Probably not another athlete who is as important to their respective sport.

It;s important to casual fans, sure, but not the sport. There are tons of young stars right now, and golf has been around for a long fucking time. It ain't going anywhere.

Tons of young stars like who? All of the guys who were supposed to carry the torch have disappointed (McIlroy, Fowler, Johnson, etc.). Mickelson is really the only other guy who can move the needle and he's clearly on the downswing. As good as Speith will be he's never going to be a huge draw.

US Open ratings were abysmal. A lot of factors go into it but Tiger not being there is a huge reason.

People only care about Tiger when he's fucking porn stars or on the leader board for a major.

Fowler has dissapointed? He just was a runner up in the US Open. People are also obsessed with him.

Kuchar has like 5+ top 10's this season, and he always has a following.

People also love Spieth, who had a chance at winning the Masters at the age of 20.

Then on top of that you have Bubba, Phil, Dustin Johnson, Adam Scott, Jimmy Walker, etc. They may not be Tiger but golf is much more exciting IMO without the distraction of Tiger Woods. He does affect the ratings greatly for sure, but there is plenty of young talent still there. I've watched a shit load of golf this year and new dudes are definitely coming up. No one is going to surpass Tiger though, he is arguably the greatest golfer of all time (obviously Jack is #1, but Tiger is in the convo).

I wouldn't consider myself a casual fan, but I don't follow golf nearly as much as I did when Tiger was winning.

The guy is over the hills and far away. He's pretty much a binky for Golf at this point..they'll eventually have to spit him out or atleast stop pretending like he's still the top dog if they are ever going to get a new face for their sport. I lol'd hard when they had him ranked number 1 a year or two ago. Desperate much?

well considering he pretty much doubles their ratings, i'd say he's a good addition to and for the field.

Really looking forward to his return. He's still on track in beating Nicklaus' major record, let's just hope he stays healthy this time. Always enjoyed watching Tiger.

I agree with whomever said he's the most important single person in any major sport. His drawing power has added a lot to everyone's paychecks. He made the game grow, all by himself. Not to mention Prime Tiger was the GOAT.

He's important to the bottom line as he brings in more casual viewership and his dominance definitely had a huge impact on the sponsorship/money that goes into golf... people love to cling to winners.

I think the more hardcore golfers don't care as much about his return, he's obviously not nearly as good as he used to be and I find it much more interesting if there is more competition on the field, rather than one player running away with it, makes it more exciting.

Prime Bobby Jones, Byron Nelson, and Ben Hogan might have something to say about that.

How important is Tiger to golf? He's EVERYTHING, he is the PGA.

not nearly as good as he was and still the best player on the tour last year.

Yeah, it is debatable. Jones' had little competiton in his era, golf just wasn't as popular then. Nelson benefitted from playing in the WWII era, his huge season was 1945. Hogan IMO was possibly the best claimant for the GOAT title besides Tiger.

Golf needs Tiger. There are no stars in the sport anymore.

Phil has played like dog shit this year and it's probably a prelude for things to come. At 44 his game will only decline more.

Rory has not turned out to be the dominant player everyone thought he was going to be back in 2011-2012.

Adam Scott rarely ever plays, and when he does, he doesn't win as often as he should.

Keegan, Dustin, Dufner , Bubba, and Garcia are all way too inconsistent.

Speith and Kuchar are consistent but can't seem to close when it matters most.

Fowler is a bust

Kaymer is a bore.

Rose is bland.

The PGA Tour has been atrocious this year. No one is able to separate themselves. Half the winners are guys most golf fans wouldn't even be able to pick out of a line-up.
