Please enjoy and discuss this breakdown.

Who are you picking? And did the video change or reaffirm your thoughts?

Heres a video of Keith Thurman murking Porter in sparring

I'm picking Keith to win, BUT, you know sparring is sparring man, Porter was just going to school on him, since he knew he'd end up fighting him for real down the line.

Also, Porter was the sparring partner there no? I mean, if he went in there trying to rough Keith up, and grapple the shit out of him, as he's apt to do IRL, he'd be Ghandi sharpish.

I included the best bits of the sparring footage in my breakdown, actually. And I agree, sparring is sparring, Porter could have pressed more, though Keith looked better.

Both have glaring technical flaws.

Porter has always struck me as limited, he smothers his own work, is mostly off-balance & (because he's not a great judge of distance & has little timing) is basically an arm-puncher; Thurman bounces around uselessly, expending energy he doesn't need to, & his footwork's pretty naff (he's got quick feet but they're not stable like a good boxer, he's often caught out of position & he only gets away with it because he's athletic).

Thurman also punches wide (if not as wide or sloppy as Porter) & doesn't hit as hard as he thinks he does.

I'm taking Thurman on a close one, simply 'cos he's got less miles on the clock, but it wouldn't astonish me to see him get upset here. I also think it might get ugly really quickly.

Good analysis. I agree with both critiques, though I think Thurman's are easier to get away with, whereas Porter's is more due to the fact he hasn't mastered his own style. A true swarmer knows how to use the space up close. Porter is great at getting there, not so much putting in work there unless he can manhandle the opponent. Thurman is still trying to find the right line between boxer and puncher to become a boxer-puncher. When he moves excessively it makes him vulnerable, and when he's up close he gets caught in exchanges off balance. I do think he's in position to punch often though, which is why he catches opponents with counters so well.

I'll be rooting for Thurman because I enjoy his fights. Hopefully we see a good fight regardless of who gets the W.

I agree, I enjoy Thurman's style more (cleaner punching and more movement) so I'm rooting for him. Did the video affect your prediction at all?

The video here and their sparring footage didn't really give me anything new to think about. I agree with Thurman in that Porter smothers himself too often. Porter also gets reckless when he does get in, and most importantly, he leaps in with hooks and has been caught doing so before. There's safer and more effective ways to close the gap than doing that. Both aren't without their flaws though and I'll still be rooting for Thurman.

Technical boxing breakdowns like this are in short supply, please keep making them, subbed to your shit.

I think this fight will come down to how effectively Thurman can box off he back foot, as Porter WILL be coming forward at him, throwing his weird awkward looping strikes. He actually did box very well off the backfoot against Bundu, landing effective counter uppercuts when he closed distance on him, and taking angles.

Though, I really think Porter has a decent chance of smothering out a decision, especially when he doesnt have to work against a reach advantage as is usual for him.

Thank you! And I agree with that characterization of their strengths. Porter can make it ugly if he can avoid the big shots coming in and constantly mauls Thurman. Thurman meanwhile will look to catch Porter coming in with short shots. I think he can get the KO that way.

This interview makes me think Thurman will go more for short counters on the inside rather than a Brook distance strategy.

He actually should. Porter's head will be in the middle for the uppercut as he rushes in.

I think its a pick em fight but I think Thurman is a little more versatile. I'll take Thurman by decision.

Porter is so damn awkward, Thurman will need a round to adjust no matter who he spares against

Exactly, well said.

Yep, he will need to get his timing right for Porter's feints and aggression. Then I think he'll start landing with accuracy.
