The Best Years of Our Lives is already a top 10 favorite of mine, but I recently filled in a few gaps I had with him, still more to go. Man I love this guy's work.

The Heiress was a wonderful display of spatial continuity inside and out of that big house.

He's one of the best, and one of the VERY best in classical Hollywood cinema. The Best Years of Our Lives is right there with Ben-Hur as his best work. If you haven't seen The Little Foxes, put it at the top of your to-see list. Detective Story and The Children's Hour are also top notch, Counsellor at Law and Dead End are strong early efforts, Jezebel and The Letter are two more excellent Bette Davis vehicles, Roman Holiday is an all-time classic, and The Desperate Hours and The Big Country are super underrated genre pieces.

And then because it's you who's asking and I know you might actually find this interesting, here's a chapter that I wrote on his awesomeness in a book on him: https://www.academia.edu/96681238/M...ctives_on_William_Wyler_and_the_Auteur_Theory

Fuckin' awesome, thanks for the link!

Haven't seen Counsellor at Law or Dead End. I actually want to get most of these on bluray if I can to rewatch them again in the best quality I can.

Ben Hur and The Childrens Hour are my 2 fav films of his

I've always heard great things about best years of our lives. With give it a watch today or tomorrow.

It's funny, as much as I love TBYOOL (and as highly as I rank it on my personal list) I don't find it a necessarily pleasant film to watch. As some have a problem watching horror movies, I've always had a problem watching war movies in the same way. Particularly people having to deal with the ramifications of war. It is truly outstanding though.

*Sorry, just finished the chapter, takes me awhile to read longer pieces on the computer for eyesight reasons.

Really liked your explanation of why and how those scenes in The Best Years of Our Lives and The Little Foxes were done the way they were.

Great work, always insightful....Thank you for sharing it with me.

And it makes me want to finally crack open Cavell's A World Viewed.
