This guy has had a brutal career. Hes nearly fought everybody of any relevance in the welterweight division. Hes had and received some nasty finishes, he was a fight away from the title at one point, he clearly went through a poor mental stage, and I dont know if hes been cut or not but he has to be on the verge of it. Watching the way he looked vs perry and brown has me thinking he got out of that slump but I wonder if hes mentally ready to fight can he put together a decent winning streak. Even if he gets cut and goes to bellator that would still interest me if he could put it all together. Can you think of any fighter who never fought for the title that has had a tougher list of opponents?

Shields, Marquardt, Macdonald, Lawler, Kampmann, Koscheck, Condit, Brown, Safferdine, Masvidal, Gastelum, Sanchez, Stephan Thompson, and more

That is a brutal fucking list. Tyron woodley is the champ of that division and his resume doesnt have as stiff competition as Ellenbergers. Aside from Matt Brown, gastelum, and Martin Kampmann all those guys are current/former champions or have fought for the title(safferdine was strikeforce champ) and those 3 dudes were all on the verge of fighting for the title. With that said theres pretty much nobody he hasnt fought and his fights can really only get easier. Do you think Ellenberger can rally back and put together a 3 fight win streak?

We should address Jon Fitch and his run in the UFC too. It is also an extremely interesting topic.

Been a fan since M1 Challenge. Great fighter at one time but his time has been and gone.

Thanks edmond

Met him in line to get a drink at UFC 199. Funny cause there were a lot of people but nobody said anything to him. Said hey and shook his hand. This was before his fight with Matt Brown. We talked a bit and he was a really cool dude. Wished him the best of luck.

Father Time definitely has something to do with it. As you pointed out he’s been in the fight game a long time and fought really stiff competition. His chin just can’t hold up anymore. Happens to everyone. Hope he considers retirement soon cause the brain damage will come. But after meeting him and seeing how nice of a guy he is, I’ll always root for him if he does stick around.

I still remember the days where he looked to be well on his way to a title shot. It wasn’t so much “if” he’d get a title shot, more “when”. He was a beast back in the day.

His resume is seriously crazy though. i think the only other person that has had as tough of a run as his is GSP. I dont think anybody has faced the level of competition that Ellenberger has at welterweight

Great resume, got stuck at a terrible camp.
His time has passed sadly. Thanks for the violence.

he started losing when he was at reign though or at least i think so

he has the worst beard growth in the world.

Ah interesting, I can say I didn't follow Ellenbergers career well enough. But the time at Glendale probably didn't help

Got sacrificed to King Perry.

He's had an up and down career, but I enjoyed his fights. He had a good run a few years back.

I can never remember what his face looks like, it's weird but maybe he has that effect on everybody!

The guy was a nightmare until he ran into Martin Kampmann. He tried to put Kampmann away early then gassed out and got ko'd. Shame really as he was so fricking fun to watch. He showed moments of brilliance in the Marquardt/Brown fights but he's never looked the same.
Then UFC used him to build up potential stars which is awful imo but I suppose they gave him many chances but I wouldn't be surprised if he's now suffering from brain trauma.

I love watching UFC but fuck their match making.

At one point he seemed destined to fight for the title and then he ran into Kampmann and it's been up and down ever since, mostly down. He's only 32, but he's an old 32, he's had over 40+ fights and has taken some serious damage in his recent losses. Don't know if he can ever bounce back especially if he keeps fighting these killers.

At one point I thought he would be a threat to GSP because of his wrestling and power, especially after the Shields KO. But things fell apart for him dramatically after the Rory loss and he has never recovered since. It's kind of crazy how long his downfall has lasted compared to say Hendricks.

Post USADA, when somebody looks like he did and is wrecking everybody then all of a sudden looks terrible and is everyone's stepping stone it is not because their gf broke up with them
