Why not install a rule where fighters have to weigh in two weeks ahead of the fight and require that any fighter that is more than, say, 10lbs over their weight class maximum at that date is disqualified from fighting in the upcoming event or else they have to do a catchweight or something? This would prevent guys from dropping drastic weight the day or two before the fight like they are now. Might take some getting used to or some refinement to the process, but in the long-term why couldn't this work?

I think they should just do away with actual weigh-ins and just take the fighters word for it.

I'm sure they'll fib a little bit but at least they wouldn't have to cut drastic amounts and ruin cards.

The issue is the fighter's hydration level at weigh-in.

Fighters cut a lot of water weight - even to dangerously low levels - to make weight. This is stupid and unhealthy, both short term and long term. It can also affect the fighter's performance if they are only say 90% to 95% fully recovered from the weight cutting come fight-time.

I actually love that the UFC continues to have these weigh-in fiascos because they bring it on themselves

Just copy the ONE hydration testing system and do away with weight cutting, it's so fucking stupid.

Oh great, so we can have more fights fall apart before the event.

They need a USADA type org for weight cutting that takes fighters weights at random times throughout the year to make sure they stay within 10% of their fight weight. I think NCAA wrestling does something like this? Maybe not as intense but I think they have some type of year round weight check system since a couple of guys died.

Have the guys weigh in a minute before they step in the cage.

If they cut all their water weight they will have to fight dehydrated. If they do that, they’ll lose and get cut from the UFC

as long as each fighter agrees to it, the fights should be open weight. no bullshit weight cutting and getting naked in front of john morgan at 9am on a friday morning.

i thought this was supposed to be UFC AS REAL AS IT GETS?

One FC has already implemented the only system that I've ever learned of that actually seems like it will work and is well thought out. If a system is going to be implemented, the One FC system deserves consideration.

cause fighters would do a weight cut to get under 10 pounds than fight week that cut what ever like normal to show up fight day

Make weight classes have a 5 pound range with no exact number example LW (155-160) Welterweight (170-175) Just my thoughts for saving fights and Title fights

This. One FC has the answer

Well so they'd make a crazy cut two weeks out, rehydrate fully, then cut drastically the day before the fight? That would be unsustainable.

Same day weighins. If you get brain damage because you cut too much, so be it.

in wrestling and usa nothing will stop people from cutting weight.

Can you outline how this system works?

I presume that while fighters get accustomed to the new system, quite a few fighters would miss weight. This means the UFC would probably have to step in and proactively monitor fighter diet, weight and hydration leading up to title fights - cos we've already had too many of those get canned for weight issues.

I presume once all the fighters are up to scratch with the new rules then it goes smoothly but the transition period might lead to even more fight cancellations.

General Regulations & Policies Related To Athletes’ Weight

Athletes must submit their current walking weight and daily training weight regularly. Athletes will input and track their daily weight online via a dedicated web portal.
Athletes will be assigned to their weight class based on collated data and random weight checks. Athletes are not allowed to drop a weight class less than eight weeks out from an event.
During fight week, weights are checked daily. Urine specific gravity will also be checked the day after arrival and three hours prior to the event. Athletes must be within their weight class and pass specific gravity hydration tests all week and up to three hours before the event. If an athlete falls outside the weight, or fails a test, they are disqualified from the event. Doctors may request additional testing at their discretion.
Catchweight bouts are allowed. However, the athlete with the higher weight will not be heavier than 105% of the lighter opponent’s weight.
ONE will conduct random weight checks on athletes at its discretion.
Athletes may petition to change weight classes outside of the eight-week competition zone and must be within their new desired weight at that time. In addition, athletes must pass a specific gravity urine test when their weight is within the limits of the newly petitioned weight class. ONE doctors can request additional testing to determine the amount of weight drop allowed over a specific time.
The usage of IVs for the purpose of rehydration will not be allowed.

Not enough depth, will water down and ruin the quality of divisions. No thanks

This would mean LW is now 160. It wouldn't solve a thing, it would only shift the problem.
Now if we moved LW to 165, everything would work out...
