How do you fit your MA workouts and cardio workouts with it? This is what I was considering doing:

Monday: Bill Starr/Heavybag skill session (five five minute rounds)
Tuesday: GPP/Core/Muaythai and BJJ class
Wednesday: Bill Starr/Heavybag skill session
Thursday: GPP/Core/Muaythai and BJJ Class
Friday: Bill Starr/Heavybag skill session
Saturday: Burpee HIIT/Core/Muaythai and BJJ Class
Sunday: Rest

Does that look like a decent weekly routine for someone who is just getting back into working out or does that look like too much? I was thinking about taking out the heavybag sessions until I get used to the classes again (I haven't been in almost a year). What do you guys think?

Humm. Depends what kind of shape you're in. 5x5 is a lot of volume for someone doing as much as you. You may want to drop the conditioning until your body gets used to it. It might end up being too much on your CNS and you'll want to switch to something with less volume.

You could try dropping it to 2 days a week 3x5 or do 3x3 split. Whatever you do, definately ease into it slowly so that you don't burn out.

Seems like way too much to handle. But if you can, go for it. You might be better off trying the Starting Strength 3X5, or a 2 day split.

Remember he said he's just getting back into working out. That definately seems like too much to do out of nowhere. Always ease into exercise routines if you're been out of it for a while and/or out of shape.

That seems like a pretty intense program if you are just getting back into it.

Watch out for burn out.

I do the 5 x 5 three times a week and I know that it can be tough without adequate recovery.

Good luck.

Thanks for the replies guys. I think i'm going to hold off on going back to class and stick with the bill starr workout and just do the GPP and core workout on the days in between. My main goal right now is to get my strength where I want it which will probably be easier without all the cardio. Once I get used to that i'll throw the classes back in there. Good luck to everyone in there training.

dont cut out your MMA training cut out the GPP/core work. You dont need to add extra core work with starr program because all the squats/deads/ohps is going to be enough for right now. Adding the GPP/HIIT is going to kill your gains.

Eclipse gym and Rippetoe suggest cutting out your cardio while on the program because the purpose of the program is size and strength. You should eat as much as possible and cut out the cardio. Then add your MMA work as you feel your body can handle it. You are not going to see the gains you want if you are doing that much extra cardio/gpp.

I did Rippetoes progam and even palying flag football 2x a week for a couple hours at a time messed shit up because my legs were not ready for heavy squats 3x per week and all the running and jumping.

If size and strength is your goal start out on your program, then in 2 or 3 weeks add a day or two of your mma training and progress from there.

Good luck.

make sure you get to train in skills at least twice a week, then focus on getting stronger

I would take out GPP / HIIT until you build some strength. Get strong and get to your desired muscle weight(walking weight, pre-cutting weight, whatever you want to call it), then add your cardio back in.

Theres not much of a reason to stress over cardio-specific training right now, unless you have a fight coming up. It'll be much harder to build strength with all that cardio work. You're better off getting real strong, then doing maintenance leading up to a fight.

I tried it for a little as I swear by 5x5 however for me it was just to demanding the squats frequency fucked with my hips and my legs were dead from squatting and got raped from MMA training so I just had to cut my lifting to 2 days a week and still lifting heavy (5x5 sort of deal)
