Taikia Waititi Puts AKIRA on Hold to Write and Direct Marvel's THOR 4 (LOVE AND THUNDER)

Taika Waititi is returning to the many worlds of Thor. Waititi has inked a deal to write and direct a follow-up to his 2017 smash, Thor: Ragnarok.

But his boarding of what would be a fourth installment of the Marvel franchise comes at a cost: Warner Bros.' long-gestating adaptation of Japanese manga Akira.

That project, which was penciled for a May 21, 2021, release and had Waititi testing actors in a worldwide search for talent, is being put on pause indefinitely as the two projects' production dates began to bump up against one another. Script development concerns caused Akira to push back its shooting start, and while some of those have been addressed, say sources, the dates were now too close for comfort.

Warners' next step for Akira is unclear. Several sources have said that Warners is keen on keeping Waititi involved for the long term and hopes to see him pick up Akira after Thor 4.

Waititi brought his own stamp to the Thor franchise with Ragnarok, infusing the movie with an idiosyncratic wit evident in his previous work like What We Do in the Shadows and Hunt for the Wilderpeople. Audiences responded to the tune of almost $854 million worldwide while critics’ raves put the movie at 93 percent on Rotten Tomatoes. The move also rejuvenated what had been a rare declining franchise performer for Marvel.

Chris Hemsworth is expected to reprise his career-defining role as the Asgardian god of thunder.

Next up for Waititi is Jojo Rabbit, a unique Nazi-era satire he directed for Fox Searchlight, which opens Oct. 18. Scarlett Johansson stars in the picture alongside Waititi, who portrays a boy's imaginary version of Adolf Hitler.

Good. Ragnarok pleasantly surprised everyone which turned out to be the best Thor movie.

Would like to see more Asguardians of the Galaxy also.

Not sure what makes me happier, more Waititi Thor or less anybody Akira.

THOR 4 should have the fantastic four! Maybe the cosmic rays could come from the bifrost or something

Is Scarlett Johansson playing Hitler?

I like see it as a standalone movie without any
mid or end credit scenes. I just some Marvel
movies without it all having to interconnected.

I am guessing Thor 4 will be Hemsworth final Thor Movie and will show him finding a way to settle the remaining Asgardians and put them on some type of path to rebuilding a legacy.

I also suspect, he will do a few cameos or co lead in the 'Revengers' aka Asguardians of the Galaxy aka Guardians. Not sure if they will try to bring in Professor Hulk for more Buddy stuff or if they save Hulk to introduce the FF4 and maybe Namor as I am not sure how many more movies he has in him?

I also think Jane Foster as Thor is coming in the stage as much as that will anger many. the reports are she has expressed openness to returning to the role with some of the more recent treatments she has been shown, after a long period of saying she was done with it. I am guessing donning the mantle of Thor is the enticement.

Natalie Portman just gave us the tiniest sliver of hope she'd return to the Marvel Cinematic Universe

...The ball is in your court, Marvel! If the comic book brand decides to give her a call tomorrow, who knows if Jane Foster could finally fulfill her destiny of picking up Mjolnir and becoming the Goddess of Thunder when Thor is forced to retire? This is the kind of Thor content the world needs right now....

Soon there will be an all new Avengers cast including female Iron Man, Jane Foster Thor, Spider Gwen, She Hulk, and Shuri Black Panther. Then they'll print guaranteed money just like Ghostbusters!

He made easily the best Thor movie. The other two movies might as well have been pills of Ambien in comparison.

Of course I'm excited for this shit.

I thought Thor 3 was only so-so, but I'm pumped for this news. Anything that keeps the live-action Akira from ever seeing the light of day is good in my book.

Sorry about your luck WB, but Thor trumps Akira any day of the week.
