Mike was very touchy feely in those years, the one image that sticks out for me is the one where he kisses Jim Jacobs so hard that Jacob's head jerks. A little strange in our society where such things are homophobic. He'd kiss his cornermen too, one of the kids he'd train with mentions he'd hug and play a lot, but didn't sound like he took it weird. I've always said though, that most of his backers rung my gaydar back in those days, Jacobs, Steve Lott and even Teddy Atlas looked like one of the village people.

I remember Mike saying in an interview that he was sexually abused as a child by a man in an alley btw. Very sad

To tell you the truth, from the first time I saw those odd habits, I thought of what Bundini Brown said to Ali in one of his spiels about great fighters. It was that being a great fighter was to be a freak in some way. he then went on to describe how a fighter, unnamed in Ali's bio, but known to be Sugar Ray Robinson used to sleep with Bundini in his arms during his comeback. bundini said it was weird and nothing sexual was mentioned but used as an example of a fighter being a freak. I always thought that about Tyson.

However, there are the rumours that Cus, yes, the sainted Cus, was gay and some people think he may have molested Mike. I don't believe that but Floyd Patterson did tell a writer that Cus would sleep with him in training and would rub up against him in ways that made Floyd wonder if Cus was making passes. Who the hell knows. Like any field, there are always vultures coming around, Sugar Ray Leonard admits to being molested by a man for money in his ammie career, one buy I think was an investor and one guy was one of his olympic coaches. You'd think a young fighter would just beat the hell out of some guy if they didn't like what was going on but fighters aren't necessarily violent outside of the ring, in fact, I'd say most aren't.

We're less homophobic than we were in the eighties but we're still homophobic and lets not forget that in our current climate, it would be advisable for any of us to think twice before we touch anyone outside our family's. According to Tyson, the "Cus is gay" rumours were started by the mob to discredit him.

The evidence of Cus being gay or predatory is pretty thin. Tyson has certainly never indicated anything of the sort.

I got done reading Mike's book about Cus a little while ago. Cus would call Tyson handsome and tell him he had movie star looks in order to build up his confidence and self-esteem. Mike thought he was a at first because old guys in Brownsville would say shit like that to young men to try to sleep with them.
