This fight has an insane story behind it. Frank was disillusioned by how Ken was running lions den and so he left and found a place called American Kickboxing Academy. In exchange for kickboxing training, Frank taught catch wrestling on Saturday and Sundays from 12 to 1:30 and Javier personally taught him kickboxing and getting in to the best cardio ship using interval training that mimics combat cardio.

The result is this legendary performance that is electrifying, the crowd roaring in passionate rage and Frank putting on a performance that is movie like. This fight was something out of a fiction novel and the results forever shocked the MMA landscape forever.

After the victory of Frank, BJ Penn also took lessons and then others came in which included Josh Thompson and Sean Sherk. With Sean, different wrestlers started coming in and then when season 1 of TUF came, you had this gym packed with the likes of Josh Koscheck, Jon Fitch, Bobby Southworth , Mike Swick and Cung Le.

Later on you had the likes of Cain and then followed with Khabib and DC come in knowing that this place embraces all forms of grappling and not just BJJ because the person who brought grappling was Frank who brought Catch Wrestling and put AKA on the map!

However it was a synergy of catch wrestling and kickboxing. Franks kickboxing skills soared through the sky and he was kicking ass standing up and people loved the catch wrestling was teaching. Javier Mendez and Frank Shamrock together were the most legendary striking and grappling instructors of their era back in the day!

It's criminal that Frank Shamrock isn't celebrated by the UFC for his career, he was probably the first I can think of to blend the disciplines together the best, close to what GSP ended up doing I guess.

Young Frank had that bangable hair :D

Frank was the man!

He even dedicated to a girl who was battling cancer and people mentioned that he stayed at her hospital room until her last day. It saddens me to hear how Frank's life turned out. I also hate how Dana was pity and tried to shit on him because Frank called out the UFC shit pay and the way he treated fighters. Props to Javier for being an excellent kickboxing trainer and he taught him really solid boxing with great kick combos and an active footwork.

I respect Ken Shamrock with the whole Lions Den Shootfighting and Ken used to have decent kicks before going to WWE and injuring himself. But he always lacked the nuance of striking. Victor Koga was the man when it came to adding sambo submissions and leg locks to Japanese Shootfighting and that is where we see Ken become a leg lock master.

But Frank realized that martial arts has many subtle aspect filled with nuances and variations within basic techniques. When he found Javier, he found someone who understands mastery of the basics. Javier used solid boxing combo, strong guard, active jab and well timed kicks to become kickboxing champ. He taught Frank to move and punch and be active without going berserk.

It was a great partnership and both did well. I wish Frank stayed at AKA because he put AKA on the map and if he had stayed, he would be still relevant in todays UFC as one of the most sought out MMA trainers in the world.

Shows the favortism and unprofessional POs Dana white is. Just because he doesn’t like Frank, they try to erase him from history books. The first middleweight(200lb) champ in the UFC.

Always liked him over his brother <mma4>

I agree, much more well spoken, articulate and has the ability to analyze and not act like a meat head. Ken was said to have a temper and although he meant well, he would scare the shit out of people. Joe Hurley who was a lions den fighter mentioned that he was browsing the net while living at Kens house and Ken got angry at something he read online and grabbed the monitor and threw it across the living room.

That is my main problem with Dana. UFC is UFC while Dana wants to inject his own personal feelings in to the history of the organization. Someone can be a horrible person but if they contributed something positive then it should be noted that they had a redeeming quality or a positive contribution.

Good thread, but Frank won by raining illegal blows to the back of Tito’s head lol.

I think Frank wanted to grow mixed martial arts while Dana wanted to grow the UFC.

Frank was doing commentary and was an analyst for the UFC for a while. Dana kept pushing frank to fight, but i think frank wanted a chair job, but dana wanted to rule.

I heard that Tito had a habit of doing illegal moves like opening peoples wounds or fish hooking opponents and doing fucked up shit.

Yes that is true, after the fight he said he wants to retire and focus on his family and promoting the martial arts as you said. Dana wanted him to comeback in 2004 but Frank wanted proper pay and Dana was not having it. So Frank called the Zuffa owned UFC: U Fight Cheap

Still true though and maybe more so with all the inflation and the prices and rent soaring to the sky. With MMA, you deal with backpain, knee pain, elbow, wrist and neck. In boxing, you tend to get less banged up and if you have defense, you can avoid many injuries. Some boxing gyms put emphasis on light sparring using fast quick punches to see if the trainees are developing proper reaction to them.

But MMA is just way too tough on the body because of all the takedowns, leg kicks, submissions and overall striking. A modern man living in a country with high cost of living cannot risk getting injured since they wont be able to work properly.

The dog thing...F' him.

Yeah its too hard to comeback from that. I watched the video and he was bawling his eyes out and it seems like he had a moment of insanity with his decision making. Still the dog thing was pretty inexcusable, you will not hear me defend him on that.

Maurice Smith vs Mark Coleman was the fight that changed MMA forever. But most of you dumbasses know nothing about it
