Countless fighters are using the logic, how can we be sure our supplements are safe.. Weve got Malki Kawi harping on that dodgy Chinese ingredients coming over are causing positives.. Fans are screaming saying how common contaminated supplements are, how there should be a safe list of stuff they can take...
Well guess what, there is, and its really not complicated.
Disclaimer: No supplement can ever be 100% guaranteed, nothing in life is 100% guaranteed, but if an athlete was using a product that had been independantly tested, and it proved contaminated, they would almost certainly get off because of having been dilligent in their decisions...
Two programs are run by the LGC Group.
http://informed-sport.com and http://informed-choice.org
Both programs are very similar in how they run, both involve various tests of products and also production facilities, before the "informed" mark is awarded. Informed-Choice is US centric and other parts, informed-sport Europe
Informed-sport are also members of INADO (The institute of National Anti Doping Organisations)
INADO ARE PARTNERS WITH WADA
And other members include multiple national anti doping agencies..
From their website:
The Informed-Choice/Informed-Sport registration process requires both a manufacturing quality system audit and pre-registration product testing. A thorough review of quality assurance systems, raw materials, and supply chain is carried out to ensure there is little risk of contamination in the finished product. This includes, but is not limited to:
- Product evaluation including formulation, label claims, nutritional labeling, contaminant testing, etc.
- Raw material evaluation at each production site
- Review of accreditations held by the manufacturing and packing facility, such as Good Manufacturing Practice (GMP)
- Quality system and Standard Operating Procedure (SOP) review for raw material storage and handling, review of SOPs for production and packaging, equipment cleaning, staff training, product traceability, etc.
- Raw material supplier assessment
- Finished goods storage and distribution evaluation
Only after the audit is satisfactory and the product testing has shown no contamination issues can the product be registered into the program and carry the Informed-Choice/Informed-Sport mark.
And then....
Once the product is registered, regular batch testing and/or blind sample testing is carried out to ensure the products in the market are safer for athletes to use. All tested batches of product are listed on this website. They can be found on the Registered Products page or by simply typing in the name of the supplement in the search bar.
So who has products registered with informed sport?
In fact, more than 90 COMPANIES have products registered...
For instance if you go to http://www.informed-sport.com/registered-finished-product-brands
and click on
they have 36 DIFFERENT PRODUCTS THAT HAVE BEEN INDEPENDENTLY TESTED
Someone like MyProtein even have a dedicated "Informed" range of products that have been independantly tested...
Is it really that hard for fighters to make sure that they are taking supplements that are safe to use?
Im in no way associated with LGC Group, informed-sport etc...
