the worst performance by a champion i've ever seen

If we’re going by a quick fight, then McGregor one punching Aldo in 13 seconds takes the cake.

If we’re talking 5 round beat down, then TJ kicking the absolute shit out of Barao for over 4 rounds and finishing him in the fifth, while being like a 10 to 1 dog.
Cain vs JDS 2 is up there too

is like he didnt even train to defend the grappling
not really. You could see for the first three rounds he kept Khamzat’s hook out when he was trapped against the cage, avoiding the same submission that finished Whittaker. It was obviously Khamzat’s plan A to trap him against the fence, break him down to a knee and get the near side hook in before getting the RNC, and DDP had obviously studied the last fight as he concentrated on keeping his knee-elbow connection and then removing the hook by dropping the outside knee to the floor any time the connection got broken. That same exchange took up nearly the first three rounds and then it was supposedly into Dricus’s territory. He’d said before the fight he knew he’d get taken down and his plan was to stand back up rather than fight off his back, after round three is when that should have come into play. The strategy was there, defend and try to let Khamzat wear himself down, become frustrated and go into unknown territory with his A game gone. I think with Khamzat’s new cardio routine he just is that good and honestly, someone less durable than DDP probably would have been finished early on.

I would argue it is not the worse performance ever. For a guy with bad TDD he went all 5 rounds with Chimaev. I would argue a worse performance by a champion was Jon Jones against Santos when Santos had no knees or Jon not being able to finish Anthony Smith.
I’ll take a competitive win over being comprehensively and thoroughly dominated any day. And I think anyone with common sense would as well.
ddp was focusing on some other, more important things

And ironically after the first round, one of the first things I hear people saying is that they don’t want to see two men hugging on the ground all night.

Most people would but it is far worse when a fighter who many consider the best of all time cannot finish a guy with no knees or beat a guy who got finished by much lower tier Light Heavyweights.

22 minutes of control time in a 25 minute fight… man, is just wild
And zero submission attempts through that time, somehow. Crazy

So would you say if Jones lost by complete domination but it was against a Santos with both knees, it would be more commendable?

Grappling is important. Apparently Khamzat is actually pretty good at grappling. Would love to see him do a grappling match.
He would have no change against the best grapplers in his weight class.
There is a huge skill gap and overall difference between mma grappling and pure submission grappling.

To me, there’s merit in getting the job done under any circumstance, even if you’re having an off night or facing a bad style match up. Getting the win at any and all costs is better than getting dominated and accepting defeat. Dricus pretty much handed the belt over to Khamzat last night. His performance said to me, “I might lose every round but at least he can’t say he finished me.”

Not a what if. That never happened. I'm not basing my logic off of 'what if" I'm basing my logic off of what actually happened. Jones went to a split decision with a guy with no knees. That's a much worse performance than what we got from DDP/Chimaev.

From a completely objective standpoint, you’re going to have a hard time making an argument for complete domination being a better way to go out than… not going out, and actually winning.

Dricus also had multiple fence grabs and was helped by Goddard to stand up.

With some better reffing, it would've been even more dominant.

Skills pay the bills. You’re not going to be able to win on heart every time. What surprised me though was his lack of urgency. He didn’t even make Khamzat work for it. And the narrative before the fight was that Khamzat would be the one who lacked character. He might have just been tired of being champion.
You might be on to something there. DDP literally could not have performed any worse if he was taking a dive for real. Yes, I'm including that cute little flurry at the end. That was classic "make it look like I'm really trying so people won't get suspicious" behavior.

After his wife kicks him to the curb next month, he can finally come out. The more I think about it, the more I'm believing the real reason DDP put up no resistance to the hugging and humping is because he genuinely enjoyed it. Yes, I'm serious.

DDP has really fucked his image/legacy up for at least the next couple of months. Dude needs to come back strong from this or he's done in the public eye. Everyone now sees him as johnny no wrestling.

In less than half an hour DDP went from one of my favorite fighters to somebody I completely lost all respect for and will never care about again.
