The weird Makhachev narrative: GSP sets it straight, calls out ignorant critics for not understanding "freaking brilliant" performance

It's well known that MMA fighters will appreciate other MMA fighters dominating by any means. Even Jon Jones, for all his steroid use, largely gets a free pass on those issues from other MMA fighters.

GSP was a great fighter, but his opinion on what is good for the sport/fans is meaningless in this sense. The only thing that matters is whether or not Khamzat, Islam, Merab, etc. bring in big numbers. If record numbers of people watch their fights, then their style is justified. If the crotch sniffing lay and pray artists end up with the lowest ratings, then their style needs to be banned. That is all.

The rules of MMA should be determined by the viewership ratings, and rules should be adjusted to make the sport more exciting. If record numbers of people watch these guys, then no rules changes are necessary. I actually look forward to the CBS/Paramount era, because we should get much clearer numbers of UFC viewership.
steroids built mma
fighters know this
thats why they are the ones that appreciate jones

gsp looked juiced to the gills in his prime
more than skinny jones lmfao

dont believe me?
you ask random people and show prime gsp pic
ask them if he looks hes on steroids
theyll probably say yes lool

it was impressive from a technical standpoint but also lackluster for people who wanna see actual fighting as a pose to a wrestling match.

Both things can be true.

Maybe. Unproven. And Jon Jones ultimately failed tests while GSP didn't. Criminals and illegal immigrants built the US, but you don't see them being celebrated anymore.

People look for different things when watchin fights.

It's SUPER impressive the way Islam shut JDM completley down. I know it. Y'all know it.

That alone made me enjoy watching it. I get that other people who genuinely like to watch grappling, are dissapointed that Islam didnt inflict more damage, or try harder to finish.

That being said...

He may be right, but that doesn’t mean I wanna watch it.

I think the story of GSP being boring is way overplayed. Not all of his fights were wall-to-wall excitement, true, but overall there was almost never any stalling or slow stretches.

Bisping - fun
Hendricks - exciting back and forth
Diaz - OK this one was kind of boring. GSP says he was sick but who knows.
Condit - exciting because Condit knows how to fight off his back and of course is a threat on the feet
Shields - OK boring, but I give GSP a pass because he couldn't see
Kos 2 - Also boring because GSP could just cruise after Kos' eye swelled up
Hardy - Some people don't like this but I think it was very active on the ground even if GSP couldn't get the sub
Alves - up an down against an opponent with fight ending power
Penn - First round was a bit slow but this was a vicious beatdown
Fitch - Another beatdown
Serra 2 - ditto
Hughes 3 - arm bar karma!
Koscheck 1 - I don't think I've seend this fight so no comment
Serra 1 - Exciting
Hughes 2 - headkick KO for the belt, come on!

So I would only call Diaz, Shields and Kos 2 boring personally.

GSP was a master of boring ass decisions, what else could he say.

Which they were, sucks that all 3 were so close together, so it didn't help matters. Plus, I myself didn't enjoy the Dan Hardy fight so it's 4 for me, personally.

I feel this way about most wrestling performances, but I can't get behind the half guard lay and pray style. Same as the body triangle and hiding your head.

It's pure stalling tactics. Both of these positions have plenty of options for offence. Especially with 12-6 elbows from half guard. You should be destroying people from there now. Islam throws a few of those prior to chasing the darce and he probably gets a finish. Instead he chose to just hold.

Especially considering these guys come from sambo which only gives you 60 secs to work on the ground or be stood up.

Islam clearly showed he can stand and fight which he did, if a fighter evidently has amazing standup, fights for as few minutes in the fight with pure standup and scores points, it should not matter if he took the fight to the ground and laid there, that's his style and it works. George is right.

I think GSP has a tendency to over-rely on his game plan. (We probably saw this in the Shields and Kos 2 fights where he spammed the same punch -- unsuccessfully -- over and over again.) My guess is this hurt him in the Hardy fight. For some reason he wanted a submission and he kept chasing it without adding enough strikes to make Hardy guess what was coming. Its weird too because up to that point GSP seemed to be a big fan of elbows on the ground. Maybe his elbow surgery made him hesistant to use those as much.

Possibly, but who really knows besides GSP? I think he was so afraid of losing again that he knew if he could hold a fighter down or keep them at bay standing for 25 minutes without risking anything, he'd do it. Now when Condit and Hendricks showed no fear, it definitely made him put his foot on the gas as well.

Funny how people forgets how fucking boring GSP was, even more boring than Shevchenko but people act like ge was the greatest thing ever.
