Now remember this is not rocket science, but essentially a mathematical anomaly.
Fighter A) is on a winning streak, but most of his fights end in a decision until he fights Fighter B)
Fighter A) is not a fan favorite, but no one can seem to stop him.
Fighter B) is an up and coming fighter from the same weight class that's recently been knocking out fighters.
When Fighter B) meets Fighter A), he knocks him out and instantly becomes a fan favorite.
Examples:
A) Fitch vs B) Hendricks
A) Hendricks vs B) Wonderboy
A) Aldo vs B) Mcgregor
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Formula #2 (The short lived hype)
Fighter A) dominates all of his opponents in every fight, and people are left wondering how can he/she be stopped until he/she meets the unexpected underdog in Fighter B)
Fighter B) is the perfect game planner.
They've been studying the champ for X amount of years and have been waiting for the right opportunity to present itself. However, Fighter B) has flaws.
They've only been preparing themselves for one specific opponent. While they fight the "perfect" fight against the unstoppable champ, they don't look the best against up and coming challengers that are now game planning for their title.
Examples:
A) Barao vs B) Dillashaw
A) Rousey vs B) Holm
A) Liddell vs B) The LHW division's next 5 champions
A) Silva vs B) Weidman [maybe/maybe not]
Let me know your opinions about these formulas, and if I should add a 3rd formula.
I'll come back and edit this post with a 3rd formula if someone has an interesting equation to add.
