Media The UFC's "Opportunity" Re-evaluated by Gray Maynard

But this hasn't happened before.

There has been no threat from anywhere, outside maybe the WWE taking Brock back.

Every monopoly is a perfect business model until it's no longer a monopoly.

The rules are being rewritten because the UFC's business model is failing to protect it's top stars; the Ali Act is historic, so yes, it's a precedent, but the landscape is changing and there will be more "Ali Acts" to come.
What makes you think it won't just stop with Francis? He just has a different mentality than most humans, most people that get to his level aren't gonna risk what he's risking. Remember the Boxing thing is not gonna be an opportunity everyone has, I'm not even convinced Francis will 100% get some huge Boxing match.

Maynard was right in his era but today is wrong. If you can headline a fight night card for the UFC then you can use their promotion of you to make more money than they can offer you themselves - BKFC and other bareknuckle orgs, other MMA promotions like PFL, ONE, bellator, cross-over boxing on a Jake Paul undercard. Thats why Dana is drawing a hard line in the sand

The twitter guy is a bit right tho.
You need to build yourself in/outside the ufc.
The best payed athletes in the ufc are the ones that need the ufc the less
That's one thing so few fighters/fans get, yes the UFC should pay a fair share to fighters, but as a fighter, it's on YOU to get over, the same way it was on pro wrestlers to get over back in the day. A lot of these guys don't want to promote themselves at all because they view themselves as pure athletes, but it's simply not the same as a regular sport. Most of these guys don't even try, Conor was the star he was in large part because he was the best pro wrestler MMA has ever seen.

I think it's just a unique situation in regards to Francis. The UFC capping their deals with time frames as opposed to contracts continuing in perpetuity if a fighter is a champion has caused this.

All MMA contracts at the top level work that way.
You can't contract someone in perpetuity in any real sense, champion or otherwise, because it's unethical.

Usually if a contract is signed 'in perpetuity' either side can cancel it at any time, because the assumption is they won't cancel it because it's mutually beneficial.

The idea of a one way clause is abhorrent and should never exist.

But it did. It may not now, but Francis' situation is unique, just like the opportunity the UFC gave Conor in regards to boxing.

MMA managers have been hand-picked from day one so that they cause minimal issues.

There's a reason the top sports management agencies haven't been managing MMA fighters, and it's not because they're not qualified or don't understand the sport; it was to limit the blowback.

Francis went to a team that wasn't peculiar to MMA, and it's been a nightmare ever since because UFC brass don't want to deal with high-balling agents, they want yes men.

Francis will get a money fight in boxing because he's a star.

'In perpetuity' isn't unique to Francis, it's a rule the UFC must abide by.

The attempt to install a 'forever' clause in any contract, champion or otherwise, is null and void.

Ok, but what makes you think this won't stop with Francis?

Most top fighters sign with Ali, or one of the other managers the UFC likes, are you saying that's gonna start changing?

Tons of guys used to be with Malki. Ali is the man now. I don't think that's going to change anytime soon.

I don't want to sound ridiculous... but isn't that the purpose of every job in the entire world? Bezos is worth billions... his 100K employees aren't rich... Bill Gates is worth billions... his whatever ex employees aren't rich... so on... so forth... etc... etc... this is just bitching about capitalism... its better than socialism... at least with capitalism I can be wealthy from hard work...

Francis went over the heads of MMA managers (including Ali) to sign with a name outside of the circle.

Their expectations were that Francis would be treated and paid as a major global world sports star, not a UFC employee.

Now, every major UFC or MMA star will be looking at what happens with Francis and how much money he can make, and they will compare that to First Round Management, Ali Abdelaziz, Suckerpunch Entertainment, and all the other MMA management brands to see how they can equal the success he does (or does not) have.

Remember, Conor wasn't with any of these guys either, and he revolutionised the idea what fighters could get paid.

This isn't any different, except now the threat is that these super agents aren't playing low-ball with MMA companies; they're trying to make tens of millions from one-off fights, and the UFC cannot compete.

"What makes you think this won't stop with Francis?"

Because everyone wants easy money.

Idk if that is true... did this ppv sell?

talk to Rowdy and get back to me

Nothing will change unless it's court ordered. I firmly believe that. The UFC should pay fighters more, and the bigger names should get a higher percentage while the floor is higher for those who are working their way up.

1,000 threads won't make a difference either way.

Still, if you're a fan of a fighter, there are ways to support them. You could purchase some of their merchandise if you are so inclined.

like venum gear?

I love how the ufc says a fighter doesn’t move the needle as justification. When McGregor was getting the ufc hype machine, I was seeing ads on the most bizzare platforms. Like the dude was EVERYWHERE.

sure you can’t just do that with every fighter and they will become a superstar, but honestly I think I’ve done better promoting than the ufc in my living room during a fight…

it’s not hard to get excited for winners, or classy champions. If they have exposure to a marketing machine.

The problem is, they either only market people like McGregor because they think it’s more about who sells than how it’s sold, or they market people who are already marketable. Think the Diaz bros or masvidal…

it still bothers me to this day that a world class PROMOTION. Struggles to promote world class talent, and their justification is “oh the dude doesn’t sell”. Maybe you aren’t doing your job.

If I had seen a single hardy breakdown on a Mighty Mouse opponent I may have been interested in the match up, or actually impressed by dj’s dominance.

Instead I don’t see ANYTHING about the fight except the finish which is Uber impressive usually. Meanwhile some unproven potential commodity like till is getting all the media push and all the big interviews.

the reason the mouths have been selling good in the ufc is because it’s the only risk they think will pay off. So they are the only fighters that received marketing.

I’m not a big fan of ball sports, but I’m quite under the impression that the big stars of ball sports don’t run their mouth to get respect.

They have good promotion/marketing and are dominant and talented. Christian Ronaldo moves an energy drink away from him and I see memes for months on it… McGregor starts tossing them into the crowd, and somehow it doesn’t even trend half as much.

ufc might have the tightest and deepest pockets out of any promotion I’ve ever seen. Spend money to make money. Unless you are the ufc.
It’s why McGregor was renting a lot of the stuff early on. He realised the appearance of a successful lifestyle sells, so he marketed himself as that.

UFC doesn’t even realise the marketing value of making your stars proper wealthy. Not many people want to watch someone who’s “the best in the world” while driving a Corolla. If they were that good they would have quantifiable metrics to prove that.

and one more semi off topic that bothers me… the fact that I’ve heard that story of Bruce buffer beating up frank trigg in an elevator. Imagine if Stephen a smith was telling stories of dunking on lebron and kobe, and not only does the promotion address it, they almost back it up.

coroporate dudes man. In it to jerk each other off. UFC is telling me that the “best in the world” also sometimes lose to a 60 year old dude who blows his knees out while dancing… it can’t be both man. Dana talking about beating Tito in a boxing match?!?!?

stop using proven world class athletes to pump up and make your corporate buddies look good.

Like if a rumour came out that gsp was picked up and slammed into unconsciousness by Sean Shelby, and then it’s backed up by the promotion, I’m ten times more likely to not give a fuck about gsp fights. (If I’m a casual).
Vent over thanks for listening
