The UFC should cut Jon Jones...

Seriously.

Historically he is not a top draw on PPV cards. Rousey, Lesnar, GSP and McGregor, Masvidal, the Diaz bros etc all have had higher draws from being on PPV events.

He hasn't fought in almost 2 years.

He's no wizard on the mic.. he usually comes off as a self entitled asshole except when he's faking contrition.

His last 3 fights have been a travesty.. A blatant illegal knee against Smith, almost losing to Reyes and Santos (both of whom have slid pretty bad since).

He's failed more drug tests than any other fighter currently on the roster.

And his personal life is a PR disaster.

The one thing he has is his W/L record and he's had exactly one recorded finish since 2013 (DC fight being overturned).

Why is the UFC hanging on to him? Let him go fight Brandon Vera again in One FC for a couple hundred grand. Or a million a year in the PFL or he can go beat all the washed up guys he already beat in Bellator.

He's in the top 3 highest paid athletes in the UFC currently and I don't see what value he brings any longer.

Thoughts?

"Big Brain" what a great idea. Fire the ufc GOAT doesn't Make sense, I think the NBA should fire LeBron too.

Jones has never lost by KO, points or submission also he is a star.

Jones would love that. He has already asked for his release, but Dana is way too spiteful to let his stars walk in their prime.

Dana owns Jone’s MMA career. Jones can’t fight outside the UFC with his contract. If Dana cuts him, he can work for the competition. Bad business move. He will let him rot on the shelf, costing Jones millions. That’s the leverage he has to get Jones to return. Fight for me at my price, or don’t fight.

Cutting him would be stupid, if he went to any rival organization it instantly boosts their credibility.

Well conor nearly killed some ufc fighters and didn't get cut.. so there's your answer.

Done reading after the first sentence. The idea that Jones isn't profitable to the UFC is fucking absurd coming out of the mouth of any longtime fan of this sport. You don't have to like him personally to acknowledge reality.

He's never been the top draw, but he's averaged 500K buys per event for nearly decade and had multiple cards sell over 700K. That's far better than the vast majority of other MMA fighters and American boxers during that time frame. The fact that Dana said he didn't deserve Deontay Wilder money is laughable. Jones has sold far more PPVs than Wilder has.

Also, even though he wasn't as popular as Rousey, Masvidal or Nate, he's sold more total PPV buys due to his longevity.

This is why they haven't gotten rid of him, because he still has 1-3 big PPV fights left in him depending on how he looks when he comes back.

ufc will never let jon go. if anything dana will pull a classic dana and never fight jon again to keep him locked into his contract preventing him from making any significant money from fighting ever again.

He would get picked up awfully fast. Sad as it is, i think the UFC would rather just keep him in Limbo. Cuzz they are cheap cucks. That is exactly what they are doing to. If they would have just coughed up some money. We would have one of the biggest fights of all time coming up with Francis vs Bones. Instead they played games.

Francis coulda played the part of the good guy and been hyped like crazy. Jones coulda played the part of the bad boy and been hyped like crazy. Instead they thought it was a better idea to dink around Francis. Dink around Jones and look like bumbling idiots in the process.

The UFC is to stupid to market these guys and to greedy to let em go.

Damn you're a hater lol. UFC would be beyond stupid to do that.

Jones would steamroll through LHW again, if not HW

You think? I'm not so sure. He hasn't steamrolled through much of anyone in a few years now.

As far as cutting him goes, the beauty (for the UFC) is that they aren't paying him anything if he doesn't fight and they make decent money if he does fight. The PR isn't great, but it's not like the old days where it could have really hurt them.

Jones is probably under contract by the UFC or something so he can't just free himself and head over to One.

But then USADA restrictions probably don't apply to fighters in that place so Jones going to have his hands full with Opponents who show the same blatant disregard towards PEDs that Jones does.
FTFY

They should not
They have invested so much in him both with money and unethical drug testing exemptions
Why should they let him off the hook to go and make money elsewhere
I would not

What is the downside to keeping him and letting him burn out his contract or even letting him stay in whatever state of limbo he is currently in?

It's not like they are devoting a lot of resources to Jones at the moment. It's basically "giving nothing, getting nothing" at the moment.

Whatever negativity they get from Jones being an idiot outside the cage, it pales in comparison to the boost a rival promotion would get by signing him.
