The thing here is they're making Interim belts for the promotion, not for the division, the fighters, the sport. So the promotion is using the sport instead of being a tool for it. That's not legit, but a sideshow.

It's hard to know what to believe. If Ngannou's team says he was willing to fight in September, was he demanding a bigger purse that the UFC were unwilling to agree to?

Or was Ngannou holding out for the Jones superfight?

MMA is a sport as real as any.

What you're trying to say is that their rankings/championships are meaningless compared to other sports. Which, yes, has more merit than it used to.

The actual fight is an athletic competition. No doubt. But everything surrounding it is sports entertainment. But there's a line between good sports entertainment and bad sports entertainment.

I guess I'm focused on the possible long term outcome of this debacle. Are they going to strip Ngannou and promote the interim "champ" as the real champ. Probably not but it's possible.

Fixed matchmaking isnt a part of legitimate sports. You don't see nhl picking and choosing who fights for the cup every year

Good point. It's like the NHL deciding Montreal & Tampa Bay will play for an 'interim' cup. LA will play NY for the Stanley Cup because they are marketable.

I think it's the dumbest interim fight ever, but at least it establishes who the number 1 contender is, I do agree with some people in here that it isn't a legit sport, I wish the UFC made it so that the stakes are higher in title fights and had rankings and match making that made sense, but whatever, been busy watching playoff hockey I havent focused on it that much lately

Really all this shit does is solidify the need for a fighters union. Higher pay, or no fights at all. Also lmao @ the retards saying "he signed the contract, he should fulfill it". That may be how it works at your job at Burger King, but real businessmen know when their value has increased and renegotiate accordingly.
