The Thing vs Alien

The Thing. The premise is amazing, and it's very well-done, however Kurt Russell's performance as the biggest movie badass is what keeps me going back. He's a damn helicopter pilot surrounded by a bunch of scientists, yet when shit hits the fan he immediately takes charge, telling them nerds what to do. The second they question his command, he threatens to kill them all. It's believable, too. There isn't a moment of the film where I'd call bullshit.

With that said, Alien is probably top 15 all time for me. It's almost as good, but The Thing murders it with replay value.

The Thing is an absolutely fantastic sci-fi film, but I have to go with Alien without batting an eye.

Its my favorite film of all time and virtually encapsulates everything I love about science fiction. It also has the greatest trailer of all-time.

Voted Alien but I love both.
I enjoyed The Thing prequel as well. They did a good job considering how good the original is and how crappy most prequels are.

Carpenter's the Thing can be watched over and over again. Alien not so much.
Aliens is in fact is eminently more watchable then Alien.

Truthfully though i suspect without Alien the Thing would have never been remade the way it was. Definitely Carpenter's best film.

The Thing for me. Alien is awesome, but the paranoia and circumstances of the thing just creep me out more. I mean, when you really look at it, once they figured out what was going on they all pretty much knew they were F'd. They hoped they weren't, but they knew and in the end MacReady just went with it. He was like, yup, were hosed, and possibly ended the movie by having a drink with the thing that just killed them all. Awesome.

love both movies for very different reasons. Alien is the most visually impressive movie ive ever seen. The set design and the gloomy vision of the future still blow me away every time i watch. the baby alien is a little silly looking, but that scene is so awesome it doesn't matter.

the thing is just more fun to watch though. the effects are such a blast and i just like where the story goes a little bit more than Alien.

both are the height of atmospheric horror. had to pick The Thing here.

Whoa whoa whoa, one does not simply compare 'Alien' to 'The Thing'. The only reason I never enjoyed Alien was because I saw bits and pieces of it on TV as a kid so all of the build up was for naught as I knew all of the dramatic parts happened. To this day I cannot sit through 'Alien' because I know when everything significant happens. However, just last night I popped Aliens into the PS3 and watched all of my favorite scenes (that is a movie like 'The Thing' that can be seen time and time again). IMHO thread should be a comparison between 'The Thing and Aliens'.
