It’s beyond terrible this is one of the worst eras of Heavyweight

Assuming Tom beats Gane/Volkov again or Jailton. Then the title eliminator for Toms third title defence will likely be Curtis Blaydes VS Sergei Pavlovich 2, two fighters who have become shells of themselves since fighting Tom, Derrick Lewis is a couple of meme/fluke koes away from fighting for the title

Lads the mma organisation we follow most is run by gobshites.

They let Ngannou go, failed to stop Jones ducking and chickening out, and have just sacked a 7-1 fighter fighter in Buday.

I'm not saying HW would be perfect with those three in it, but if you don't have a lot of options to start with maybe try and hang on to the ones you have, rather than fucking everything up.

Isnt this what a lot folks wanted?

The HW division can finally move on! Lol. Well here is what moving on looks like.

The best one I read was blaming Jon Jones was the reason why Aspinall will never feel the satisfaction of being called undisputed HW champion formally, except over a phone call.

When in reality the 100k cry babies who signed a petition who wanted Jones stripped & Tom Aspinall himself spreading and eagerly promoting it for anyone to sign is the reason why.

This is what you folks wanted, now you got it, i better see Aspinall having 1M PPV buys, when in reality there is high possibility he sells less than that strip petition.

The contenders for the next year or so are pretty much already set, and that's assuming no surprises (such as Jones or Francis return), immediate rematches, or big injuries.

-Gane (October 2025)
-Volkov/Almeida winner (probably April-ish 2026)
-Ankalaev's saying he's moving up soon (October-ish 2026)

By the time all that's over the landscape will look different. HWs can rise much faster than other divisions.

i feel like HW has always been this way. i just wish aspinall treated the interim like the real belt and completely ignored jones. the interim belt was given out specifically because jones was holding up the division. but then aspinall did the same thing. it wou'dve made for a better setup for aspinall to just clean the division and make jones beg for the unification.

ive always seen the undisputed vs interim subject the opposite of most people. once the interim is put in rotation, you are automatically a disputed champ. its not the interim champ that gets the #1 contender fight, its the now disputed champ that gets the #1 contender vs the interim.

I’ve been repeating this for years now, but if it the very first thing an interim champ does is unify the belt again, then you didn’t need an interim champ. The UFC has been crowning interim champs solely as a marketing tool for awhile now, it really devalues their titles and does a disservice in the long run.

exactly. all the more reason the interims should consider themselves the "current." stop treating it like a concrete #1 contender and just move forward. top dog is now technically holding a disputed belt. the interim can defend against anybody in the division. the disputed champ MUST fight the interim.

but yes interims have, historically, been handed out to keep ppv numbers comfortable.

Every single internet discussion about heavyweight is always just repeating the same mantra that "heavyweight is the worst division" or that rephrased in some way or another. I take the position that I want to see the least handicapped version of any sport including MMA, and for MMA currently that's the heavyweight division, so I am always most interested in HW fights.

A big part of the problem is modern fighters always choose now to dehydrate themselves to death and fight at lower weight divisions. So you got guys like Jiri, Poatan, Jonny Walker, this big Chinese blockhead Zhang, all would be perfectly fine at HW if they wanted to test themselves. Think of how these guys look all gaunt and fucked up when they weigh in. Prime Mike Tyson who was 5'10, weighing in at 215 or 220 pounds, I bet he could have cut weight and look like death warmed up to fight at some kind of handicapped division but he paid the iron price so to speak and fought at HW like a man.

It just seems to be getting worse and worse with each year that passes. Its really sad to see.

I really don't know what the answer is to fix it, the UFC HW division needs a lot of time/money/effort and big investment to fix it and make it great again. It won't be a quick fix, its been left to get stale for far too long and eventually rot.

Maybe Mario Pinto can do something at HW. Also Valter Walker and Gaziev. Waldo was sort of a prospect, but failed with Pavlovich, so he's going to need to reinvent himself to make a real push for top 5. Diniz maybe could be something with good TDD. Still don't have much hope but some guys look like they can do something.

I've been following MMA for a long time. I can't remember a time where heavyweight wasn't considered to be terrible. I think we need to just understand that in the same way an 18-wheeler can't do what a Ferrari can do, a heavyweight just can't do what a flyweight can do. Plus, there are simply less athletes to choose from. MMA is just not as popular to partake in when you get to heavier weights -- go to any MMA gym and you'll see how few people there are over 190ish pounds.

Kongo beat a prime 27yrs old Volkov
10 years later, he's ranked #2.

2010s top 10 UFC HW could all be champ today

Cain
JDS
Werdum
Cormier
Reem
Brock
Mir
Carwin
Big Nog
Big Foot
Add prime Barnett, Kharitonov, Tim, AA, CC, Herring, Fedor to that list

Heck even Buentello would be top 5 again lol
