"Picard's life was radically altered by the dissolution of the Romulan Empire"

Now admittedly I have only seen the 2009 Abrams movie once or twice in its entirety and it's been 8 or 9 years since the last time. I know Romulus has been destroyed, but I wonder if it has ever been made explicit that this is automatically the end of the Romulan Empire?

If remember back to nemesis, the Empire was already starting to fracture and divide. There were sides whom wanted nothing to do with the Federation, and continue its cold war. Other side wanted to cool tension, and even consider opening relations with Vulcan. You also had the Reman element.

Could have one option, with the whole Typhon pact thing. Romulans form an alliance with other regional powers, to fortify themselves against the size of the Federation. That in turn forces the the Federation to expand it's alliance with the Klingons, to include the ferengi, cardassians, ect.

Star Trek online has followed canon going along with the destruction of Romulous. Romulans split into two factions, the smaller of which sides with the federation, and the other side, jined with the Remans, add other allies.

I'm guessing we will get elements from both. I also just re-read the Countdown comic today, and that would make a great opening mini movie to open the Picard series. Too bad Nimoy has passed away...

Another new series announced. We are getting the rumor section 31 show staring Michelle Yeoh

Riding the high of a Critics' Choice Award win for best comedy, Michelle Yeoh has further reason to celebrate Monday.

CBS All Access has officially tapped Yeoh to captain a Star Trek series of her own: a black ops-themed spinoff of Discovery in which the actress will reprise her role and explore the next chapter in the life of Capt. Philippa Georgiou. The untitled drama will further explore Starfleet's Section 31 division, a shadow organization within the Federation featured on Star Trek: Discovery.

The untitled live-action drama, news of which leaked in November, is currently in development, but given that CBS All Access owns Star Trek and is paying Alex Kurtzman $25 million to captain the franchise, it's considered a slam dunk to move to series. The move allows CBS All Access, writers Bo Yeon Kim and Erika Lippoldt time to extend the Star Trek world and mythology as part of CBS All Access, and for Kurtzman also to plot animated series Star Trek: Lower Decks, a Patrick Stewart-led Picard live-action drama and others, including a younger-skewing Starfleet Academy entry from The O.C. duo Josh Schwartz and Stephanie Savage.

"Michelle has shattered ceilings, broken boundaries and astonished us with her grace and gravitas for decades. As a human, I adore her. As an actor, I revere her,” Kurtzman said. “Erika and Boey are remarkable, exciting writers who bring a fresh perspective to the world of Star Trek, and we’re all thrilled to explore the next wild chapter in the life of Captain Philippa Georgiou.”

As with all Star Trek series, Kurtzman will exec produce via his CBS TV Studios-based Secret Hideout banner, which is run by Heather Kadin. Rod Roddenberry, CEO of Roddenberry Entertainment and the son of Star Trek creator Gene Roddenberry, will exec produce alongside Trevor Roth. Aaron Baiers will co-exec produce alongside Kim and Lippoldt.

In a Creative Space interview that published Jan. 9, Kurtzman told The Hollywood Reporter that there is a limit to how many Star Trek series are part of his overall franchise. "There has to be. At a certain point people are going to say, 'It all feels so familiar.' The only thing I'd throw back is that nobody seems to have said that about Marvel. Between film and TV, no one is tired of them. That means that in a world of a global audience, there is always room for more, but the more has to be meaningful," Kurtzman said.

"I’m so excited to continue telling these rich Star Trek stories,” Yeoh said. “Being a part of this universe and this character specifically has been such a joy for me to play. I can’t wait to see where it all goes — certainly I believe it will go 'where no woman has ever gone before!'"

Yeoh is a former Bond girl, and other credits include the Crouching Tiger franchise, Memoirs of a Geisha, Sunshine, The Lady and more. She is currently enjoying the awards season circuit in support of blockbuster hit Crazy Rich Asians.

Season two of Star Trek: Discovery bows Jan. 17 on CBS All Access.

So there really seems to be no real limit to the amount of new shows.

I mean we already have
1) Discovery (multi-season)
2) Picard series (multi-season)
3) Lower decks (animated)
4) Animated series no 2 (aimed at kids)
5) Yeoh Section 31 Discovery spin-off

Their view seems to be that franchise fatigue was not caused by too much content, but rather by too much content that was too similar in style and content.

I hope they are right. And I hope they deliver.

All access is desperate for content, and star trek has the built in base, so they are opening up the purse strings. The section 31 show will be interesting to see. Your having murderous, tyrant, who eats people as the lead character. Now, Yeoh is a wonder actress, but it will be interesting to see how the market this. IMO they need to go in a spy thriller type show. Also the announced showrunner, are two younger women Erika Lippoldt and Bo Yeon Kim, who wrote several episodes of Discovery and only have one other writing credit. Pretty crazy they are being given the show.

Today's the day. Season 2 of discovery premieres tonight. So far the reviews have been stellar. For this in the USA you can get a week free on all access right now. For those outside the USA, Netflix has added all the short trek episodes, so you have some entertainment, before season 2 drops

Wow episode 1 was stellar. Totally different vibe. Anson Mount is great as Christopher Pike. Story was great and the special effects were insane. Hope everyone checks this out

In a new interview, Julie McNamara, the Executive Vice President of Original Content at CBS All Access, said that Yeoh's series might not premiere until after Star Trek: Discovery ends its run.

“Some of these [series] can be considered as replacements as opposed to additions,” McNamara said in an interview with The Wrap.

----

So this strongly indicates to me that Discovery is not going to get the seven seasons treatment.

All this talk about Section 31 makes me remember how Bashir would wake up and
Sloan would we be there in a chair and went all espionage on him.

But one time Julian trapped him to get the cure for Odo

The special effects in this show are unbelievable. It would clean up technical awards at the Emmy's in any other year, but this is set to be the final season of Game of Thrones, so good luck.

Good episode. Not sure how I feel about them hinting as thickly as they did at a Spock-Burnham stepbrother/stepsister twist, but Hollywood loves to pander softly, and this is obviously a huge Phub/Xvid/Xham trend in our culture right now. Nothing sells like the taboo. I won't fight it. Calamine at the ready.

I also hate that I get the sense this Pike isn't the real Pike, or if he is, he is being mind-controlled across the multiverse or whatever by a mushroom-wielding Michelle Yeoh. Crossover incoming! I want them to forget they even did that. Forget that mirror universe existed. It's so f***ing stupid. Ruined the first season. The show was doing amazingly well up until that twist in the narrative was explicitly introduced.

the acronym for this show is hilarious STD the orville does a better job of star trekking.

Only saw the first 40 minutes of S02E01 yesterday before I went to bed.

Lots of stuff that makes me hopeful, and yeah the effects are great, but...why did we need this Phantom Menace podracing stuff?

Spock has issues with Micheal, because there mother treated her as a human would. Sarek demanded that she treat Spock as a Vulcan, and stop being emotional with him. He's upset at Sarek and Burnham for robbing him of his mother human emotional side.

Yeah it was visually stunning, but they didn't really need that. My biggest issues with the episode(a minor issue) was when they took the turbo lift. Apparently the turbo lift is basically, Space mountain, and the Discovery is just empty inside.

Would have to view that one again in slow motion.

Saru detected she was "anxious" to see him-- eagerly anxious. This is vague, and while her unwillingness to acknowledge her excitement is symptomatic of her character, and Vulcans in general, the comic relief yielded from that scene leaned on the classic, "You're blushing" trope. This was given more shape later when Sarek tells her, "I don't think he ever fully....accepted you." She replies, "He may have-- for a time." Indeed, again, it is all vague, but it was intentionally vague with this potential resonance.

Whatever. As long as we never return to the mirror world see Ash and his terrible acting again I think I will be alright.

Well ... No need to return to the mirror world for that. We are definitely gonna see him this season I'd reckon.

That was meant to have an "or". These are the two things I want. I never want to see Ash, again, and I never want to see the mirror world again.

The mirror world was a fascinating concept that was butchered by stunted political worldviews. Ash is just an awful, confused character played by an even more awful actor. He's ficken terrible. He's one of the worst actors I have ever seen given a large role in a major production.
