"Picard's life was radically altered by the dissolution of the Romulan Empire"
Now admittedly I have only seen the 2009 Abrams movie once or twice in its entirety and it's been 8 or 9 years since the last time. I know Romulus has been destroyed, but I wonder if it has ever been made explicit that this is automatically the end of the Romulan Empire?
If remember back to nemesis, the Empire was already starting to fracture and divide. There were sides whom wanted nothing to do with the Federation, and continue its cold war. Other side wanted to cool tension, and even consider opening relations with Vulcan. You also had the Reman element.
Could have one option, with the whole Typhon pact thing. Romulans form an alliance with other regional powers, to fortify themselves against the size of the Federation. That in turn forces the the Federation to expand it's alliance with the Klingons, to include the ferengi, cardassians, ect.
Star Trek online has followed canon going along with the destruction of Romulous. Romulans split into two factions, the smaller of which sides with the federation, and the other side, jined with the Remans, add other allies.
I'm guessing we will get elements from both. I also just re-read the Countdown comic today, and that would make a great opening mini movie to open the Picard series. Too bad Nimoy has passed away...
