The Soccer Kick

surprised to read these responses. Personally, I'm all for soccer kicks and knees to a 4 point opponent, and 12/6 elbows. The removal of these strikes favor wall and stall a lot. That's why I'm glad that Browne found a little loophole with his elbows. More guys should knee to the shoulder off the sprawl, but whatever.

Thanks OP. I enjoyed that video.

Someone should tell Wandy to go sign with One FC. I think he could make a fun little run over there before he retires.

The problem with soccer kicks is there's a solid object involved-the cage.

If someones head is against the cage and someone gets head kicked, that could literally kill someone. In a ring, your head would have somewhere to go and you would just be under the ropes.

I'm all for knees and elbows though. North South is essentially useless other than for chokes in the UFC.

Knees to the head on the ground are needed to keep the flow of a fight going. There are so many controversies with fighters getting kneed while standing up. Soccer kicks aren't needed though

Man can't watch that Roger Huerta one. That has to be one of the worst stoppages ever. He was gone like 10-15 seconds before the kick.

Literally kill someone? Haha. Dude, Wandy used to stomp guys. Stomp. Nowhere for the head to go. No one is going to die. The same way that no one has died in One FC.

I'm ok with soccer kicks. Maybe they're not needed, but I think they add an element of reality that would change a lot of fighters' strategies.

If somebody soccer kicked or head stomped somebody in a street fight they'd be seen as a thug and a coward. Therefore it has no place in MMA

Although I do like watching it ;)

Damn, those refs don't give a shit as long as the fighters connect at least one soccer kick.

? IDK man, where I'm from, stomping dudes out was normal.

There are two areas Where as i can see these as improvements to the game.

North south positions would become much more active al la Mark Kerr.

I enjoyed how well the kick to the head worked on the opponent doing the Gracie lie on your back defense while your opponent stands. That I always felt was an unfair advantage given to the grounded opponent. He had no incentive to improve his position as he has up kicks and the opponent has to wade through a storm of heels to get in.

I used to love the soccer kicks to be honest, seems to have no place in modern MMA though.

It also stops wrestlers from spamming poor takedowns and then laying on all-fours ducking awkward standing strikes.

Were you not in the slightest disturbed by the full-blown soccer kick Huerta took to the face? Soccer kicks are a very easy and swift way of inflicting damage to someone. It requires little technique and makes it significantly harder for fighters who are rocked to defend themselves. The only people who want to see it are those who complain about lay n' pray and the 3-point rule for downed opponents.

Rather add soccer kicks and remove elbows on the ground.

Soccer kicks finish what was already started, elbows mostly just cut and a guy can't even defend himself while taking a brutal beating, cause he can't see. Plus, it makes the fight 'active', which gives a huge advantage to wrestlers.

I agree, another benefit of removing elbows on the ground is you see more action from both guys. The guy on top has to create space to strike and the guy on bottom needs that same space to either get back to his feet, to sweep or to get a submission.

100% truth

If this were true then everyone in Pride would have been landing soccer kicks but they weren't generally the guys who landed soccer kicks trained to land them. There is footage of Shogun and Wanderlei training soccer kicks and stomps when they were in Pride and it payed off cause they landed more soccer kicks than most everyone.

Besides soccer kicks aren't as damaging as head kicks as the lever doesn't travel as far and your landing with the foot which is more frail than the shin.

The main reason soccer kicks aren't legal in the US is they look more brutal than they are, IMO stomps are more dangerous as your head is trapped between the foot and the canvas.

Yep, I didn't wanna go full into details, but this is it.

In my eyes, that's the worst rule ever in modern MMA.

You're on point today. Stomps have to remain illegal because the head is trapped and the back of the skull is impacted directly. Soccer kicks are "brutal" but no worse than anything else. Guys really don't hit with the shin often. When they do, the fight is almost always over at that point (just like a solid headkick).

Elbows, to me, are worse. Though I believe they should still be allowed to. But if we're getting rid of one..... get rid of elbows.
