Bet that's especially enjoyable in the rain and wind and snow and blistering summer sun and humidity
Much better than dealing with customers or doing inventory inside the walk in freezer.

That is all horseshit. Cart duty is the WORST job. It rains, snows, gets hot, people drive like morons. Target can't even hire people to do it half the time. They quit after a week. One of the worst jobs I ever had as a kid. And it DOES affect you when a cart smashes your car door in the wind or you can't park in a spot because there are 3 carts in the spot.People get all bent out of shape about this, but the only people it truly effects are the staff members who go into the lot to round up carts.
Meanwhile I've heard from many people who worked at supermarkets that cart duty is one of the best tasks because it puts you outside, you can take your time, you don't have to talk to customers, and it gives you the chance for a smoke / vape break.
Moral of the story, the people actually effected by your choice to return the cart or not really don't fucking care at all and some of them actually want the excuse to take longer to perform this task.
I like it. Personally, I would put it in this orderIt's an interesting perspective and thought exercise. I don't get too worked up about it, but it's a good tool to break people into the 3 douche levels:
1) Take the cart back- Good Citizen/Non Douche
2) Does not take the cart back but kinda knows it's not the right thing to do- Garden Variety Douche
3) Does not take the cart back and finds ways to defend the choice- Elite Level Douche
It is no different than anything else. Certain people and cultures take pride in doing the right thing. Other people and cultures don't give a shit about anyone or anything besides themselves. The stores in my town tend to not have to lock everything up and the carts are put back. I go a few towns over and it's Beirut. I watched my parents do the right things, so I do the same.
It is one thing to have no respect for things and make a mess. I hate that. But it is a whole other to purposely fuck things up for other people. You see it all the time in bad neighborhoods---bus stops, parks, sports fields, anything given to people get fucked up. I was in Brooklyn yesterday at a stop light next to a bus station. Someone stole the bench so people were sitting on the sidewalk that was covered in broken bottles and garbage. At one Sam's Club here, the elevator is so battle damaged with indications of multiple special ed retards stabbing at the metal interior. Why would a person do that?
