In Venom, they made it a good guy. In Wicked, the witch is misunderstood. In the LOTR Amazon series, they recently tried to give orcs a human side to them, giving them a sad back story. It seems like a recent trend in making it so that there's no bad guys. I think they're trying to make a social commentary like people looting aren't bad people, etc...

Never heard of an anti hero before?

Were Tony Soprano and Walter White great guys?

That's why I'll never forgive the MCU for making the Red Skull one and done. And no, the Stonekeeper version in IW and Endgame don't count.

Herr Schmidt is to Captain America what Joker is to Batman: he's the Hero's equal and opposite in every way. A complete monster who's only, "redeeming" quality is that he's great fun to watch.

You could write a thesis on all the weird stuff in the Amazon LOTR series. Essentially, everything got inverted. It's a perversion of the story that undermines the original story's message. The Gnostics talked about something like this called countermimicry, which is the primary form of Archontic deception. Archons are unable to create anything, they can only copy. Countermimicry means to copy something but make the counterfeit, the fake version, serve a purpose counter to the original thing or idea. It's the co-optation of something genuine via replacement with a phony version, the luciferian inversion.

It's good writing to give your villain motivation. It certainly makes Thanos more interesting that he was actually trying to help.

So like doing the wrong thing but for the right reasons.

Like anything else though, if you get too much of it then it becomes meh. Then all you want is a truly evil bad guy that does bad things because he's selfish or insane.

Venom was always the anti hero? I remember he had his own comic book series when I was a little kid.

That's what Tolkien was going for in the Simarillion. That orcs were perversions of elves, trolls of ents, etc. I haven't watched rings because the majority of feedback has been that it's terrible, but did they manage to get that point backwards?

You gotta watch real life docuseries such as the Dahmer or Bundy ones. Only in the real world will you find villains. Not Hollywoods wacky fantasy land. There are no bad guys, no 2nd place as everyones a winner, no genders. Welcome to 2025.
