We all have eyes, we know he is an absolutely phenomenal fighter.

BUT he barely has fans and his opponents have even less.

The weight division is unpopular and has an unpopular champion fighting unpopular challengers.

This all culminates in the majority of ppl really not giving a crap about what he does...

The sad truth about MM

That's fair. I love MM but I don't know much about the guys he's fighting. It's not a deep division and UFC doesn't put much effort into familiarizing us with them.

MM is a cool guy. I think he's likely one of the most down to earth champs we'll ever see. He streams on Twitch every day just talking to fans and playing video games. Who the fuck else does that?

It's the weight class in general, people just don't like it.

His best option would be to take at least a fight at 135 to get some love. People are saying Cruz, but if I were him I'd start with a super fight with Uriah or something like that

Maybe if he was a D-bag like mcgregor or Bones he'd be more popular? sucks that it works that way

MM is ugly and has zero charisma. That's nobody's fault but his own.

He has the record and skills to be a face of the UFC. Apparently he's missing 50% of what is also needed: charisma to do publicity events. Megastars have got to be the total package and there's clearly something lacking here or the UFC would have mercilessly shoved him in our faces for the last two years.

One thing I have never read is someone actually quantifying why they don't like MM other than his size. All I see are quotes like "I just don't like him"...."don't like the division"....etc. They never list any reasons and while everyone is entitled to their opinion, without reason it becomes an opinion without cause. My thought is, if you like MMA, you appreciate technical skill, high fighter IQ, exciting styles and someone that can impose their will on opponents. Exactly which of these traits does MM lack? None is the simple answer.

The only thing most fans have against him is that he and the division are "small", which reeks of the whole bigger is better mindset. That is just insecurity at it's finest, that someone can't like or appreciate an individual because they are smaller in stature.

To be honest I am not a big fan of that weight class however I respect his fighting abilities and I was entertained by his last fight and most of his fights. I also respect him as a person.

Unless he keeps winning for years longer in phenomenal fashion I'm probably always oing to follow the higher weight classes more or even WMMA. That is just the way it is....for me.

Well in all fairness, when people say they dont like someone...
I think what most of them really mean to say is "they are not a fan" doesnt mean they hate the guy.

but I'm sure some do dislike him for silly reasons like you named though...

He lost a decision, like almost every other oponent Cruz has fought. Anyway, it was years ago. MM evolved since that fight, and so did Cruz's injuries. I believe MM has real chances against Cruz, and a superfight could maybe save flyweight division, if he wins. If not, well, the division cant get anyworse than already is.

I see your point and agree to an extent. You rarely hear that someone isn't a fan though, it's usually that they don't like him. We all have fighters we are fans of and ones we aren't but again, if someone chooses to state they are or aren't, give a reason that has merit instead of just making a statement. I am not a fan of Jon Jones. Why? I cannot root for any athlete that comports themselves in the manner he has to this point. He is arrogant, narcissistic, a former (?) drug addict and a criminal. That's my opinion but at least I list why I do not root for him.

Fair point though, thanks man.

last night actually made me a fan of his. I feel like as long as he keeps going in for the kill and finishing once he exposes his opponents weakness, he will gain more fan's just as I was gained last night. what always bothered me was once he achieved a dominate state in the fight, he looked like he sort of wracked up points without taking huge chances. last night it looked like he went "oh, my knee hurt you huh, goodbye now" hopefully he keeps that killer instinct and gains more fans. as far as his competition, If benavidaz can't take him out in their 3rd meeting, I'm not sure who's left

Haha well said. Funny how fcked up it is that arrogance, vanity and misbehaviour attract so much attention.
