There is nothing wrong with building a guy up slowly. That's exactly what they did with Jones, and look how well that worked out. The problem Conor is having now is that he had too much success too soon, and he's not as developed as a fighter as people thought he was. He blasted Aldo and that was awesome. But the guy still has almost no ground game to speak of, and now because of his success he MUST fight big name fighters, that have been in the sport a long time and are more developed martial artists than he is.
Ideally he goes back to fighting mid-tier guys and works on plugging the holes in his game. That takes years to do. But he can't do that. He can't go backwards.
What will happen now is the guy most likely loses his next 2 or 3 fights in a row, and gets washed out. And fans will say he was a flash in the pan who was never that good. But he IS good, he just hasn't had the time others have to develop properly. He's a victim of his own success.
