THE piano thread

Eh...thanks for posting. I don't know what to think about it. Beautiful music for sure, but doesnt actually go anywhere.
It's very strange, that's how I felt about it, I thought when I first heard it I recognized it, that it was from a recent movie soundtrack, but while he has done scoring, I don't think any of these are from movies I've watched. His style immediately reminded me of Cliff Martinez, but on the piano. I think that is its strength, and where this music would be best used: for a soundtrack. It sets an ambience, powerfully evokes a mood, it isn't about progressing a musical idea.

However, I found myself drawn to it. I kept playing it again; listening to "The Fly" repeatedly at a very high volume.

Here is a cool one, guys. I realized all of the dope Hamelin content I posted looks like it was shot from a potato because its the early 90's. So., here is a better looking video of him playing a few Chopin/Godowsky etudes. Now...you all probably all have heard of Chopin, but maybe not Godowsky. As if the Chopin etudes aren't difficult enough alone, Godowsky arranged them all in fucky ways that make them more difficult but still sound good. If you don't have time for the entire vid, certainly checkout @7:45. It is an etude for left hand alone based on Chopin's Op. 10 no. 6 and its fun to watch because it really sounds like 2 hands

Well thank you for posting, I was gonna say it sounded like it was from some soundtrack, but I couldm't figure out which one. The first piece reminded me of GoT season 6 ep 10 tho.

Here is Horowitz the first piece of Horowitz first performance after 12 years of "retirement". At Carnegie Hall. He drops a clunker in the very first bar and then goes on to absolutely crush. It's incredible, especially the third movement. Enjoy!

@BroRogan you get extra credit for liking my post...here is a bad as fuck video of Cziffra playing some different Bach-Busoni.

@volodya thanks for the @s :) I really like to check this thread and listen to the new postings. Always interesting/cool stuff

How the hell is this five pages and nobody has mentioned Thelonious Monk? Shame on you all!

@Sweater of AV @BroRogan @OldFashion and whomever else is hearing, here is an awesome live performance or Richter playin the 2nd Mephisto Waltz of Liszt. I'd recommend listzening to this with the volume on HIGH, as its meant to be ;-)

Guess I'm on a Richter mood right now tonight @BroRogan . Here is his Harmonies du Soir from the legendary 1958 recital at Sofia. Fuck!!

digging this interpretation of Graceful Ghost Rag atm. Hamelin is a G

I dig this too, brother. THere is something about the dorkiest looking dude alive having the best chops. I got to meet him once in Antwerp and he was just a regular, humble nerd.

Glenn Gould seems most famous for his Bach, but I think he has the best recording of the 2nd movement of Beethoven's 13th sonata of anyone I've ever heard:

This young man is a very skilled and accomplished classical pianist. Here is a very difficult arrangement he created of the jazz song from Disney's original Jungle Book.

YES. Good choice. I think they use a differemt recording in "32 Short Films About Glenn Gould" but i'd have to track the film down again and rewatch to be sure. Either way, he's the only on I can think of gets that movement absolutely right, its awesome!

This is probably my favorite Gould vid. He comes across looking sorta like a young James Dean here, but he's just playing himself. Awesome keyboard shots of his incredibly unique technique. What a baller...
